State of the Comm
Hello het reccers!

My fellow mod stars and I have been chatting behind the scenes about this community and what we can do to encourage het_reccers’ long term health as an active, vibrant place to share fic recs, and there are a couple things that we’d love everybody’s opinion and thoughts on.

Posting via Tumblr Submisisons or Dreamwidth

One thing we’ve been talking about is the idea of allowing rec posts via tumblr submissions. LJ is our current home and serves as a comprehensive repository of all our posted recs, but LJ is also a dying platform for fandom, with most people hanging out on Dreamwidth or tumblr these days.

Our question to you is: would you use tumblr submissions to post to het_reccers? We’re especially interested in the opinion of anybody who follows this comm on tumblr - would posting via tumblr make you more likely to contribute and share recs? Our ask box is open or you can respond directly to this post or reblog to share your thoughts.

(What we're thinking is that any recs shared via tumblr submissions would be cross-posted back to the LJ comm, perhaps posted as a special “hetreccers_on_tumblr” user account. This cross-posting would probably be manually done by the mods at first, but we could potentially automate it using something like ifttt.com, which is what powers our tumblr mirror.)

Alternately, if you're mostly on Dreamwidth these days - would you be interested in better cross-posting between the DW mirror and this community? We know that this was something that was not doable at the time the Dreamwidth mirror was created, but if it's something the community is interested in using, we could take a second look and see if there's potentially anything we can do now for better integration and to share posts between LJ and DW. What are your thoughts?

Community Participation (and Some Upcoming Events!)

And second, a more general question: is there anything we can do to encourage more participation? Are the monthly challenges still working? What would inspire you to write a manifesto? Are there any special events (discussions, challenges, something completely different?) that you think would be fun for the community to tackle? Any general thoughts, suggestions, or wacky brainstorming ideas you’d like to throw out?

If you’re a lurker on the comm, or somebody who posts infrequently or not at all—is there anything we could do that would make you feel more comfortable with posting or sharing recs?

Just to give you a quick peek at some of the stuff stars and I are planning, here’s what we are currently thinking of doing during the upcoming months:

  1. Promo posts for the community. We’d like to create a rebloggable post on tumblr and something cut/paste-able for DW/LJ to do some advertising for the comm.

  2. Friending meme. To get to know our fellow het reccers better! ♥

  3. October reccing challenge. October is the community’s anniversary month, and we'll be organizing a trope bingo reccing challenge—handing out bingo cards with different reccing categories, and challenging people to post 5 recs during the month that’ll give them a bingo. We're really excited about this idea, and hope you will be too!

  4. More discussion posts. We both enjoyed the Marvel discussion post this past month and hope to do more of the same in the future when the right topics/community events present themselves.

You can either respond to this post on LJ or tumblr, go to the tumblr ask box which we'll keep open until the end of the month, or message the mods directly if you feel more comfortable sharing your thoughts that way—stars (LJ/tumblr) or blithers (LJ/tumblr).

I'm one of the die-hard LJ people, and Tumblr scares me. :) However, I think it would be great to great cross-posting coming here from there (and hopefully from DW as well - I have an account there, but really do all of my hanging out here).

The trope bingo sounds terrific!
blithersblithers on June 17th, 2015 06:59 pm (UTC)
Yup, that would be the idea with cross-posting: this comm has our full set of recs and tags/ships, and we always want a place where we have our entire backlog of recs categorized, so the idea right now is to enable posting in other places that can make its way back here as well. But we need to see how many people would use it/if it's worth the effort, and on what platforms.

Tumblr is, in my opinion, an absolute blast once you get the hang of it, but it is a very different pace and style of interaction than here on LJ, and takes getting used to - and it can be hard to find people/tumblrs to follow when you're new. If you do end up signing up for tumblr at any point, though, you should hit me up and say hi! :)

And yessss! Both stars and I are really looking forward to trope bingo. ....There might even be some prizes, *coughcough*. Just sayin'. ;)

So I'm a lurker, because I'm kind of shy about posting in comms. I think what would help me post is knowing someone would be interested in my recs. I'm currently really into The Hobbit. Is there anyone out there who would like to see recs in this fandom?
blithersblithers on June 17th, 2015 08:10 pm (UTC)
Hi! I know I'm not personally into the Hobbit (I have, amazingly enough, never seen the movies?) but I'd guess there are other people in the comm who are. Hopefully they'll speak up!

I will say, though - I often use the tags here to find fics for a ship when I'm getting into them for the first time. For example, I tore through all the recs posted under the Game of Thrones Brienne/Jamie tag a couple days ago, since we're just now getting around to watching season three of the show (finally), so I'm catching up to where everybody else was, like, four years ago. So sometimes you're reccing to people in the future, getting into your ships for the first time. Also, I've had enthusastic recs here inspire me to read fics I've never seen or read the canon for, even. So you never know. :D

...If you have a lot of recs, you could always write a fandom or ship manifesto? I know those are more work, but they're a fun way to try to get people into your ships and fandoms. I've definitely started watching a show or reading a certain ship after reading a manifesto for it here.

PS - Love your icon. That is such a gorgeous picture of Willow!

I don't do Tumblr, so I can't speak to that, but I do post at Dreamwidth as much as here, although I'd say lj is still my first post of call, which may make me unrepresentative. Anyway, I like the idea of this remaining the central repostiory and welcome any attempts to get more recs.

As an infrequent reccer who probably won't be reccing in the near future because of demands on my time, a manifesto terrifies me, partly because I'm an omnivorous reader, and a lot of the high quality fics I'm reading were recced here...so. (Although maybe the trope reccing would be a way around that.)

I'd welcome friending memes and discussion posts.
Katherine Joy Summersstars_inthe_sky on June 18th, 2015 02:08 pm (UTC)
Well, we're definitely doing the friending meme and more discussion posts in the future, so we'll look forward to seeing you there!

I always mean to rec things... but then I think maybe the shippy fic I like isn't shippy enough. And I remember that I'm into fandoms that are 20-50 years old and that nobody else will want to read my recs. (Which is kind of silly, I know.)

I am sort of working on three manifestos, but apparently deadlines are actually good for me with those. Also they are vv old things nobody will be interested in etc. etc. If it's a modern/busy fandom, of course then I think someone else will rec it and better. And with shippier fics. Because so goes the brain of a cautious comm-member. ;-)

I suppose (unsurprisingly, given that we're on LJ), I'm another LJ-foremost person & happy to still be here. I'd like to be able to Tumblr properly, but I can't.

I *will* try and post something!

The reccing bingo sounds intriguing. And keep up the good work - reccing's often kind of thankless, but the building up of such a huge resource is an amazing thing that I think people do appreciate and use.
Katherine Joy Summersstars_inthe_sky on June 18th, 2015 02:17 pm (UTC)
Honestly, post your recs! As long as there's a ship in there somewhere to tag, it's fair game. I've personally recced a character-study fic where the other half of my current OTP appears unnamed in a single sentence :) Ships aren't the be-all and end-all of a good story—obviously we here in this community love a good romantic and/or sexual element, but they're not the only thing that makes a story worth reading.

As for small/rare fandoms, I think that's one of the greatest things about this community, actually. It's easy to find good stuff in popular fandoms, but I love coming here to discover stuff I didn't even know there'd be fic for!

I would love more activity on the DW comm ♥
blithersblithers on June 18th, 2015 03:39 pm (UTC)
Me too. I’ve been thinking a lot abut the Dreamwidth comm in the last couple of days - I did a bit of poking around (and tree confirmed) that it looks like there is still no automated cross-posting between DW and LJ comms, so the easy solution is out. And the DW comm has the same out-of-tags situation that the LJ comm has faced in the past, which makes it tough as well.

We do have tools like ifttt.com at our disposal now, so it’s possible we could automate *something* - I’m just not sure quite what yet?

I’ll be continuing to give that thought - it’s really great to know what the interest level in the DW comm is, and that you’re one vote in favor.

I don't read as much fanfic. My fandoms are much smaller too, or at least they're less prolific. That's why I haven't done recs here or at DW in a long time. I read fic in exchanges but usually people write genfic.
blithersblithers on June 18th, 2015 03:40 pm (UTC)
I know what you mean. Although, I have to say, I am desperately hoping for a new spate of X-Files/X-Files RPF fic coming out of the new season (because I still COMPLETELY GIDDY over the fact that it is a thing that is actually happening).

I need to get in gear and post some reccs. >_< I have had a few bubbling away in my head but I haven't put it very far up on my agenda. I so appreciate the amazing fics I've found through this community and I do feel I need to give back so I'm moving it up on my agenda!

I'm not on Tumblr.

As for increasing participation--maybe occasional admin posts during the dry spells, so we remember to post when we read good stuff? Sorry I don't have anything better...

Thank you for adminning this comm!
blithersblithers on June 20th, 2015 03:14 pm (UTC)
Hmm, maybe we could be better in various admin posts about reminding people that they can post whatever they want, whenever they want? We could try to remember to bring that up more often. I know I at least don't want to inundate the comm with admin reminders too much, but I think you're right that people sometimes need a nudge/reminder that we exist.

Thank you! <3 It's been a pleasure - het_reccers is an amazing community, with a fantastic group of people.

I love the reccing bingo and friending meme ideas! I heart Dreamwidth, so I'd always be up for more mirroring there. I do have a tumblr and have kind of a love/hate relationship with it, but I always re-rec posts of interest from this comm on there.

I wonder if there is a way to make manifestos collaborative (I think I do remember some co-writes, but didn't check)? I can be intimidated (or just lazy) in approaching writing meta, but if I knew there were someone else into the same ship that would co-write, that might be cool and helpful AND make people friends.

ETA: I also meant to say that because I signed up to be a special reccer, I've been hording my recs!

Oh, I'm glad you like the rec bingo and friending meme ideas! And that is great to know about your use of DW/tumblr - I find that I really enjoy the ability to reblog the lot of the posts I make here on my tumblr as well.

I LOVE the idea of making it clear that manifestos can be written by more than one person! I see no reason they can't be, if there are multiple people interested in working together on something. Maybe we can make that clear in our pinned post on manifestos, and if we do a manifesto challenge again at some point in the future (which I'm thinking sounds likely from the feedback we're getting, to encourage people who need a deadline to write/finish any manifestos they've been thinking about) we could say that as well then and give people a space to see if anybody else wants to collaborate on something.

And ah, yes, special rec hording. :D My posting would always go down to practically zero as soon as I signed up to be a special reccer, heh.

I think it would be good to have tumblr involvement. I'm not a tumblr person but it seems to be the "in" platform at the moment.

A friending meme would be \o/ :)
blithersblithers on July 5th, 2015 12:39 am (UTC)
We're going to ramp up the tumblr stuff (allowing submissions through tumblr will be the big thing) once we finish ironing out the technical details. I think everybody likes having LJ has our main community (and it will continue to be so!), but allowing people to submit recs elsewhere and making sure we have cross-posting seems like it'll benefit everybody.

I'm excited about a friending meme too! :D

blithersblithers on July 8th, 2015 08:08 pm (UTC)
Yah! That is great to know. Stars and I have been chatting about getting tumblr submissions set up next - we're still trying to figure out some of the technical details with how mirroring between the sites will work in that case, but cross your fingers, we'll get that up and running soon. :)
