Revolution, 5 recs: Charlie Matheson/Bass Monroe
I realised I had totally, irrevocably fallen for Revolution about the time the news of possible cancellation set in.  And the great flowering of Revolution fanfiction - and particularly, the Charloe ship that whispered a little in Season 1, and then yelled its head off right throughout Season 2 - seemed to take place in het-reccers defunct period.  So without further ado, five Charloe recs, most of them recent, all of them wonderful.  (I'll save the rest for the fandom manifesto I feel the need to write - after Nanowrimo.)

Why This Must Be Read: The possibilities of where our embittered, fierce warriors might be if society hadn't collapsed is endlessly fascinating to most Revolution readers; this story takes that potential and hits it hard, giving us a Bass Monroe that left the Marines to become an artist.  Young Charlie Matheson is studying art, and jumps at the chance to intern at a gallery that is featuring her uncle's old friend as its artist-in-residence.  Their affair explodes all over the page and is by turns scorchingly hot, heartbreaking, uplifting, and ultimately, immensely satisfying. Consistently good from the first word to the last, this story is a marvellous mix of fabulous writing and wonderful storytelling.

Why This Must Be Read: Quentanilien paints with emotion and dialogue; drawing out the endless push-and-pull between these two individuals who have so many obstacles to overcome before they can trust one another, let alone contemplate anything more.  But Monroe is desperate to be understood, and Charlie wants answers to the questions she's been trying not to ask for years.  Cue the world's most emotionally-fraught drinking game.  The character dynamics are perfectly pitched, giving us an absolutely canon Charlie and Monroe finally talking about some of the mysteries we were left with when the show ended, and the story feels like very satisfying postscript to the not-an-ending we got in canon.

Why This Must Be Read: Charlie and Monroe decide to solve their loss and abandonment issues together, and end up slowly sliding towards domestic bliss. Sexy, fluffy, feel good fic that has some killer lines  - "Their relationship is one of silent decisions and unwittingly synchronized movements. They are a happy clock, gears turning in the background and all of the things that make them tick moving in time to one another" - and a quiet and calm about it that is just delicious to read.  Bonus points for poor, confused Miles trying to figure it all out.

Why This Must Be Read: It starts out screamingly funny (and hot) and gets angsty (and hot) and then the plot kicks in (don't you HATE that?) and overtakes what could have been some perfectly good uncomplicated smut.  Sublime post series fic that manages to invent the sort of complex, nuanced backstory the Revolution writers should have, and takes the characters forward in a way they forgot to.  So many reasons to love this - or you could just read it for the constant, perfect snark.  Or the superb smut.

Why This Must Be Read: In which the fake married trope is turned inside out and shaken hard.  Charlie and Bass navigate a relationship they've stumbled into while fighting a war that is dragging them in different directions.  Dense, thrilling, well-plotted action fic that is infinitely richer than this trope usually delivers.
