Fandom: Star Trek Voyager
Pairing: Kathryn Janeway/Chakotay, Belanna Torres/Tom Paris, Kathryn Janeway/Will Riker, Kathryn Janeway/JeanLuc Picard, Kathryn Janeway/Q, Naomi Wildman/Icheb, Seven of Nine/The Doctor, Seven of Nine/Data, Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris
Oh Star Trek Voyager - the love of my life. Its easily my second favourite-most-passionate-consuming-of-m
Voyager came on during my early teen years and I cannot undervalue its impact on my life. Those are the years where groundwork for you you're going to become is laid - and having a woman like Janeway to look up to during those years was invaluable. To be able to turn on the tv and watch this ridiculously intelligent, brave woman with more sass than she could dish out commanding a starship and a crew - well now, thats pretty much revolutionary right there.
Voyager is a product of the mid-90s feminist push on television. There's never been a more diverse tv landscape than those years - for race, gender and heck even orientation (though thats being thankfully challenged now - woot for diversity). There was Janeway, The Queen of My Heart - but there was this ridiculously wonderful cast behind her, specially the women. Smart, tough, brave and complex female characters. Belanna was full of so much passion and anger; so intense but completely unyielding when it came to who she was. And then there was Seven - who is just so ridiculously interesting that its a shame that complexity is so frequently overlooked because of the catsuit. She was so damaged, a victim of such vicious abuse - and yet here she is, jumping back into the world.
They were all badasses. And don't get me started on their relationships with each other - I can go on FOR DAYS. The sisterly/mother/daughter relationship that Janeway and Seven had was just remarkable. How many episodes and conversations were there dedicated to Seven learning how to be a woman from Janeway - a feminist icon teaching another how to be! This mutual respect and love they had for each other. And then there's Belanna + Janeway - a relationship that started off antagonistic but grew into such a wonderfully supportive brain-trust lol (seriously - how many times did those two save the ship with their big brains) - and fic has really taken up the gauntlet for these two, that they are really BFFS. And my favourite fic for this fandom is gen with the ladies hanging out.
And then you have the men; the wonderful wonderful men of Voyager. I have a thing for strong female characters; a big thing. But the flip side of that is that I love male characters who love strong women. And the men of Voyager are that. Chakotay, Tom, Tuvok, Harry, etc - all of them serve under this badass captain and work with these ridiculously fierce women. And they love it - but not in that creepy fetish way. Its what Trek is about; there's an equality on Voyager that is so rare. The strength and power of Janeway, Belanna and Seven are not seen as threats to the men on the ship and the male characters don't see it that way either. Despite how much power they have, or how loud their voices are, or how smart they are, the men are never threatened. And that right there is frakn revolutionary. Their masculinity is not tied to the disempowerment of the women around them. But they are still complex, interesting, smart, strong men.
Lets talk about Chakotay. He ruined me. He ruined me for all men ever. I prettttty much fell in love with him. I love him for all the reasons I just stated about the men on the show. Chakotay is an Alpha male and there's no getting around that; he's verile and dominating and physically imposing. But he's also the most gentle soul ever - he's kind, patient, intelligent. He's just the bees knees. And the fact that he falls so completely head-over-heels in love with Janeway makes me LOVE HIM EVEN MORE.
Which is why Janeway/Chakotay is my OTP of all time. They fit so perfectly together; like ying and yang. They bring out the best in each other and are there for the worst. He loves a strong woman, but he's such a pillar of strength himself that they are equals in many regards. They can move back and forth between strength and support, each one of them taking up a different role depending on the situation. Sigh. Just so many feelings about them.
As for Tom/Belanna - they shouldn't have worked, but they do so very well. Tom, the party boy criminal, and Belanna the angry terrorist, were able together to bring stability into each others lives. It shouldn't work; two unstable crazy people shouldn't be able to become steady together. Yet they did. Watching their relationship through the series is just so wonderful - their character archs, who they were at the start to who they end up as in the end. Who would have though that the two of them would come home mature, married and with a family.
Below is some of the fanfic for this vunderbar fandom. Its largely J/C but I have included a bunch of other pairings (and many JC stories also contain Tom/Belanna). There isn't a lot of het for Seven included - because I've always read her as queer so reading het for her has never made much sense for me. Also - a lot of the links will be for non traditional ff websites. I've recced a lot of older stuff that I adore. I've been reading fic in the Voyager fandom for well over 14 years now (omg I'm so old!) and this was back before a03 or livejournal or really ff.net really got started. I actually used to print the stuff out and I kept it in binders under my bed hahaha! such a nerd!
Fic Rec #1: Janeway's Turn
Rating/Warning(s): hard R, consensual sexual touching, very very light BDSM
Why This Must Be Read: There's an undeniable spark between our favourite captain and our favourite Q (though who can blame them, Mulgrew has chemistry with a paper bag and DeLancie is just an epic tease). In the context of the show you have to believe that Janeway at least entertained the notion of being with Q in that way. He is omnipotent and she is an explorer….and a powerful woman whose been stuck in space alone for years. So there's reasons. And this short little fic explores all of those; the tiny nuances that make up both of them; how the concept of power comes into play. Its a really fun dirty read - albeit with some true darkness lingering under the surface.
Fic Rec #2: Just for a While
Rating/Warning(s): R, angst
Why This Must Be Read: I don't ship J/P, but I wouldn't be a very good fangirl if I didn't notice that there was something between the two of them that could have been explored. I really enjoy this little vignette. Its them bonding over their losses, the number of people they've lost over the years. Its poignant and sad, but there's something rather comforting to it. The thing about J/P is that they could have worked if their timing was right; the right time, right place. But they never were - so it never happened. I think this story shows that - the glimpse of the right moment.
Fic Rec #3: Home
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Belanna/Tom
Rating/Warning(s): PG13 (some chapters R)
Why This Must Be Read: This is one of my all time favourite JC stories. I first read it in high school - I actually printed out a copy to read, oh the days before anyone really knew what fanfic was and you could read it in public shame free hahaha. This is a lengthy lengthy story, its really a novel. Set post finale…sortof. Voyager is back in the Alpha Quadrant but a lot of the season6/7 elements are ignored. Cassatt beautifully builds up the Janeway clan - you get to meet her entire family and that alone is a treat, watching them embrace her Voyager family. Plus there's all the political ramifications and issues that arise from their homecoming.
Fic Rec #4: Tying the Threads
Author: multiple; editors: Cassatt + Shayenne
Pairing: multiple, all canon compliant
Why This Must Be Read: several heavyweights in the Voyager fic world set about to tie up the loose ends that the series finale left. What happened when they got home? The politics? What happened to the Maquis? How does Naomi deal with being on Earth and meeting her father? What happens with Tuvok? How do Tom and his Dad reconnect? And of course - how do Janeway and Chakotay get their crap together. Its a wonderful, lengthy read that is canon compliant and adds some much needed resolution to the Voyager story.
Fic Rec #5: Commander Chakotay, Your Stick
Rating/Warning(s): PG13, humour
Why This Must Be Read: Lighthearted and fun, this fic has our dynamic command team playing pool in Sandrines. They are flirty and bold, pushing the limits of the relationship.
Fic Rec #6: The Captain, Her Commander, Their Cook and His Lovers
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Tom/Belanna, Neelix/full brothel lol
Rating/Warning(s): R, crackfic
Why This Must Be Read: This is one of those ridiculous stories that has just kinda stayed with me over the years. Its silly and I'm not even sure if its actually good, but I have never been able to think of the word prehensile the same way ever again. Or look at Neelix the same way.
Fic Rec #7: Love and Lust
Pairing: Janeway/Paris, Janeway/Chakotay
Rating/Warning(s): NC17, consensual sex
Why This Must Be Read: its a choose-your-own ending story! Shayenne sets up the possibilities for Janeway for both Paris and Chakotay; she has to pick between them. But you get to pick. There's an ending for each handsome man. Its really fun and believable - and who doesn't love a choose-your-own. Oh, and its HAWT.
Fic Rec #8: Voyagers
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Tom/Belanna
Why This Must Be Read: its SO good. An AU based around the original Voyager Commander not dying when they were dragged into the Delta Quadrant. Its a political minefield as Janeway tries to merge the two crews why trying to stave off several attempts at mutiny. MaquisLeader is one of my absolute favourite fanfic writers so she handles this story really really well. Oh, its also quite long - so brew a cuppa tea and settle in.
Fic Rec #9: Workforce Trilogy
Pairing: J/C, Belanna/Tom
Rating/Warning(s): R, episode related
Why This Must Be Read: Workforce was a pretty good episode, but there were a lot of unresolved issues left at the end of it - like how do you readjust to your life after you've had your mind wiped and living another. This Trilogy story is wonderful - answering all those questions and exploring the consequences and strains that the ordeal had on the crew.
Fic Rec #10: Better than Cloning
Pairing: Naomi Wildman/Icheb
Rating/Warning(s): PG, drabble
Why This Must Be Read: I have a weak spot for this pairing - and this little drabble is just a glimpse into the potential for these two. Set in the Alpha Quadrant, Icheb and Naomi meet up on her graduation from the Academy. Its a great one-shot to read if you're wondering if its a pairing you could be into. And the voice for Icheb is spot on.
Fic Rec #11: Reporting for Duty Trilogy
Pairing: Naomi Wildman/Icheb

Collective Freedom: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3378936/1/Reporting-For-Duty
Frozen Fiasco: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3963197/1/Frozen-Fiasco
Why This Must Be Read: sometimes when you have a rare ship, there's never any good long plotty stories for them. Thankfully MavFan has filled that void! This series, coming in together around 90 000 words is all of that and a kettle of fish. Its awesome. Set post-series in the Alpha Quadrant both Naomi and Icheb are serving aboard the USS Lindbergh - and what follows is a wonderful action-adventure romance that just fills out these characters potential futures so well.
Fic Rec #12: Filling the Void
Why This Must Be Read: a novel length story playing on the trope of 'Tom Paris tries to hook them up' - but its done really well. Its a bit campy and silly in places, but its overall pretty fun. There's also a lot of character study about the characters and the whole ships crew pop up at some point during the story.
Fic Rec #13: Her Lovers
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Janeway/Will Riker, Janeway/Justin Tighe, Janeway/Mark Johnson
Rating/Warning(s): M; consensual sex
Why This Must Be Read: a five-times fic; the five men Janeway has been intimate with. Its beautiful, short but really beautiful. Tiny glimpses into the different stages of her life.
Fic Rec #14: Fragments of Us
Pairing: Kathryn Janeway/Will Riker, Will Riker/Deanna Troi, Janeway/Chakotay
Why This Must Be Read: I don't really ship this pairing, but when its so well presented as it is here you can really actually see why it would work. They'd kinda be great together. The story plays with timelines gone wrong and potential paths previously not taken, become taken. Plus there is canon compliant shipping :)
Fic Rec #15: Without You
Why This Must Be Read: Some of the best Voyager fic is the stuff thats told from Chakotay's perspective - the absolutely wonderful character studies that go on; his ruminations on the people around him, on Janeway. And Jacks delivers with this piece. Set post series, Chakotay is miserable and his sister has to kick him in the pants to go get his woman. Its everything you want in a JC story.
Fic Rec #16: Cracks in the Ice
Why This Must Be Read: its just perfect. uuuuug the perfect. Nynaeve captures their voices SO spot on. Its a quiet, subdued story, set at winter with a Christmas theme.
Fic Rec #17: Much a Q-About Nothing
Pairing: Janeway/Picard, Data/Seven of Nine
Rating/Warning(s): PG - theres some slash + femslash references in here - some Picard/Q and K/7, but I'm against K/7 and I still enjoyed this story.
Why This Must Be Read: Data/Seven of Nine. Yup - you read that. This is pretty much the only story I've ever been able to find for this pairing which is a shame because its kinda awesome. Yes?. This story is a comedy, almost crackfic as Q comes to the lowly humans for dating advice. But, Data/Seven!!
Fic Rec #18: Watching
Rating/Warning(s): NC17 - consensual sex, trio
Why This Must Be Read: I almost didn't include it - it really pushes the definition of het, but I did anyways. Its a damn hot story and I've long been fascinated by the level of flirtation Q gets on with with both Janeway and Picard…so this story just feels natural. I can believe that Janeway/Picard would happen and theres enough canon evidence that Q/Picard happened, so why not all together! This is pure smut - funny, smut, but still. So read at your discretion.
Fic Rec #19: The Illusion of Normality
Pairing: Seven of Nine
Rating/Warning(s): PG13, asexuality
Why This Must Be Read: It depends on your perspective and definitions of het, but asexuality, to me, falls both in the category and outside. Its all a spectrum right. This is a beautiful and rare piece of work - Seven examines her sexuality and whether or not she has one. And its based around the prompt "no actually, Seven doesn't have to embrace sexuality in order to be human". Its something thats so rarely explored in fix - we have this urge to pair people up into relationships - that they aren't whole until they are. So I think this fic is incredibly poignant and important in that regard.
Fic Rec #20: Time on My Hands
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Belanna/Tom, Seven/Doctor
Why This Must Be Read: Its perfect….and its new. A lot of the fix I've recced in this manifesto is old … and I fear it reads old. This story does not. Its fresh, new, feels youthful. And its perfect. Set post series finale, it ties up lose ends and puts a little bow on it. The character explorations are wonderful and just watching these people adjust to normal life is great.
Some general archives that might be of interest:
Lower Decks Archive: a collection of fic focusing on the lower deck crewmembers. All pairing types.
KoffeeKlub: One of the original JetC fic archives on the web. There is SO much stuff hosted on this site that I don't think I've even read all of it.
