Day 01 - A fic for your current favorite ship.
Fandom Category: Lost Girl
Fic Title: Quarantine
Author: Diana Crescent
Genre: Comfort, humor, friendship.
Why This Must Be Read: I love this story because it's really sweet without being saccharine. I love that there's a solid reason behind the caretaking that Kenzi does, and that while he's not too sure about the whole thing, Dyson really gets into the groove of being taken care of. MY HEART.
Day 02 - A fic for your very first ship.
Fandom Category: Star Trek: Voyager
Pairing: Katrine/Jack Miller (Kathryn Janeway/Chakotay)
Fic Title: We'll Always Have St. Claire
Author: Maquis Leader
Rating/Warning(s): R, KIDFIC!
Genre: Romance, AU, post-ep, kidfic.
Why This Must Be Read: Okay, this seems an odd choice for my first ship, as they're not actually my first ship, but I can't/don't read fic for any of my first fandoms at all. And this is an AU version of AU characters they were headjacked into playing while being hunted by an alien race who took over Voyager. But this is, literally, a story of my heart, and the one that most invokes my inner-14-year-old.
Day 03 - A fic for UST.
Fandom Category: Everwood
Pairing: Nina Feeny/Andy Brown
Fic Title: Creaking Scaffold
Author: vega rin
Rating/Warning(s): PG. Hint of adultery.
Genre: Angst, AU, friendship, introspection.
Why This Must Be Read: I'm putting this in the "UST" category because that lack of resolution, and the build up to it, is what drives this story. I always loved Andy and Nina and the odd friendship/maybe more relationship they built because when they met, it was the exact wrong time for both of them to pursue anything but friendship. But neither of them are blind, or stupid, and that hint of "maybe" and "tomorrow" can sometimes be just as damaging as "never".
Day 04 - A fic that demonstrates how a pairing with little canon romantic chemistry/interaction can totally work.
Fandom Category: The Avengers/Thor
Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Clint "Hawkeye" Barton
Fic Title: In Cupid's Little Bag of Trix
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17, violence, sexytimes.
Genre: Action/Adventure, romance, friendship, angst, AU.
Why This Must Be Read: Okay, not only is this ridiculously sexy, it also does a phenomenal job of world/universe building as well as relationship-building. It's basically the story of how Clint and Darcy get interested in each other, get to know each other, date, and fall in love. But it does such a good job of growing these characters, while still allowing for flaws. Also, it's ridiculously sexy.
Day 05 - A fic with the best kiss/sex scene.
Fandom Category: Bones
Pairing: Temperance Brennan/Seeley Booth
Fic Title: The Backrub
Genre: Romantic, sex, friendship.
WIP?: Complete! (Be sure to skim through the other one-shots.)
Why This Must Be Read: The sensuousness of this story is very striking. There's a languid aspect to it that just sticks with me. It's almost a zen breathing exercise in and of itself. Slow relaxation, meditation, and clarity. In that order! But as done with backrubs and sexytimes.
Day 06 - A fic with the most heartbreaking scene.
Fandom Category: Star Wars
Pairing: Padme Amidala/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Fic Title: Sand Beneath Our Feet, Stars in Our Eyes
Genre: Angst, AU, retelling, friendship.
Why This Must Be Read: UGH, this whole story just GUTS me. It's mainly a Padme piece, but the tone of it, the way Obi-Wan and Padme interact and their whole dynamic just makes me want to curl into a ball and cry. Padme's whole life and situation CRUSH ME, but the almost-not-quite-totally-yes just breathes through this whole story, and breaks my heart.
Day 07 - A fic for a pairing with a lot of baggage.
Fandom Category: Revenge
Pairing: Emily Thorn/Nolan Ross
Fic Title: Insurance
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17. Dub-con, humiliation.
Genre: AU, friendship, betrayal, trust.
Why This Must Be Read: Dear god, these two are fucked up. Their whole relationship is a lesson in trust and power and submission, and this story nails those aspects in prose, form, tone, and execution.
Day 08 - A fic for a pairing about a wedding and/or baby.
Fandom Category: Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Pairing: Laura Roslin/William Adama
Fic Title: If Not, Winter
Genre: AU, Romance, babyfic, angst.
Why This Must Be Read: Um. Dude. Adama/Roslin babyfic. If you're not already reading it, I don't know what to do with you. Seriously, though, this is an incredibly readable story that diverges at the end of season 2, and really digs into the life and logistics of New Caprica in a way that I wish the show could have done.
Day 09 - A fic for your favorite live action TV show pairing.
Fandom Category: Farscape
Pairing: Aeryn Sun/John Crichton
Fic Title: I Don't Like Mondays
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13ish? Violence, spoilers for later seasons.
Genre: Action/Adventure, friendship, humor, dark.
Why This Must Be Read: I can't read a lot of Farscape fic because the aired canon is so genuinely satisfying that I don't need it. Which is why this story surprised and pleased me so much in that it actually reads like a lost episode. The author nails the characters, and while this isn't a huge make-out fest (and is possibly more gen?), the underlying certainty of Aeryn/John is a constant bedrock.
