Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Steve Rogers
Blurb: Aside from Darcy/Bruce, my other favorite Darcy crack pairing of late is Darcy/Steve. Mainly because I have a lot of feels about Darcy, and a lot of feels about Steve, and naturally, the two of them combined give me All The Feels. All of them. Which explains why I was crazy enough to go back for seconds during this round of manifestos.
Despite being a crack pairing, there's something about the two of them that just makes sense together. Darcy is absolutely a modern woman and the product of our times, but at the same time, there's something very retro about her--as many people have noticed, she, or rather the actress portraying her, Kat Dennings, resembles a 40s pin-up girl, which I'm sure Steve would appreciate given his canonical bias towards curvy brunettes. On a less aesthetic/shallow level, Darcy is uniquely poised to assist Steve with becoming acclimated with the 21st century. Like many people her age, Darcy is undoubtedly conversant with modern pop culture. In addition, as a political science major, she would most likely have a working knowledge of American and international historical events.
Unsurprisingly, those two points form the basis and are the major point of connection for many Darcy/Steve fics. Despite that, there's a wonderful range in the way the following authors have chosen to interpret these tropes and the course their relationship takes. It can be fun and cracky, gentle and thoughtful, or raucous and sensual. Whatever you're in the mood for, there's a fic that'll satisfy.
Fic Rec #1: A Space Between Series
Rating/Warning(s): T/PG-13- M/R. Warnings for sensuality, violence.
Why This Must Be Read: I've rec'd "A Space Between" before, but it has since become a gorgeous series that is a must-read for anyone interested in Darcy/Steve. I adore this particular interpretation of both Darcy and Steve. Unlike the typical fanon portrayal of Darcy as the spunky, glib personification of the Internet, this Darcy is a little more subdued, with relatable and realistic damage of her own to work through. Her Steve is not the naive, blushing, "aw-shucks" character many of us have encountered in fandom. He's still a man out of time, working on letting go of his past to figure out his future, but he's no Boy Scout. He's a man of deep conviction, imperfect but fierce in his loyalty and not afraid to get his hands dirty or knock some heads if his loved ones are threatened. And this Darcy and this Steve together? Guh, I swoon. They are, by turns, quietly romantic, passionately sensual, and savagely protective of each other. Highly recommended.
Fic Rec #2 Who You Are
Why This Must Be Read: From the same author is a new WIP that is unconnected with her other series. It is a notable rec because it doesn't rely on either of the two most common tropes in this particular corner of fandom. Steve and Darcy both work for Stark Industries but aren't known to each other. Steve can't help but notice the woman with the gorgeous laugh and quietly gathers all the intel he can find on her until he can muster up the courage to approach her himself. He finally makes a move, only for the both of them to get drugged and kidnapped by some shadowy organization. It's a refreshing take and I appreciate that Steve and Darcy don't fall together all that easily. In fact, Darcy isn't entirely certain she likes Steve all that much, poor baby.
Fic Rec #3: the way that light attaches to a girl
Why This Must Be Read: This story is from one of my favorite authors and features Artist!Steve which I always enjoy. It's a lovely character study of Steve and his relationships with 5 different women in his life, whom he's drawn. The last one is of course, Darcy, in all her gorgeous, retro, pin-up glory.
Fic Rec #4: Figure Drawing
Rating/Warning(s): M/NC-17. Warnings for sexy times and er...nudity?
Why This Must Be Read: More artist!Steve! Steve gets roped into watching Titanic with the girls and after that scene (you know which scene..."draw me like one of your French girls"), Darcy and Steve get onto the subject of figure models. She jokingly offers to pose nude for him, since he never had the opportunity and Steve, surprises of all surprises, accepts. The sexy conclusion was inevitable--it's still a WIP and we haven't reached the "main event" yet, as it were, but things are certainly heating up. Yum.
Fic Rec #5: A Series of Unfortunate and Impossible Events
Rating/Warning(s): T/PG-13. Warnings for blood, death, attempted rape (very vague allusions)
Why This Must Be Read: Because it's Vampire!AU Darcy and Steve.
...Oh I'm sorry, you needed more of a reason to read this? Fans of Vampire Diaries/Being Human may appreciate this particular story--as I understand it, the author drew on these shows'
Fic Rec #6: A Quiet Assignment
Rating/Warning(s): E/NC-17. Warnings for explicit sex
Why This Must Be Read: Here, have some slightly AU smut wherein Cap is assigned to New Mexico on a fluff mission to acclimate himself to the 21st century and is helpless to resist Darcy's considerable charms. This was a fill for avengerkink and features Steve's healthy appreciation of Darcy's curves and Captain America lingerie.
Fic Rec #7: Shake the Glitter Off Your Clothes
Why This Must Be Read: This must be read because a pairing isn't legit unless someone has written acccidentally-married-in-Vegas fic for it. Which is what this is, and it is the most delightful of crack fics.
Fic Rec #8: Spoiler Alert
Why This Must Be Read: This is another Darcy-tutors-Steve fic and it's quite enjoyable. There's some very cute banter, because Darcy and Steve will never not be adorable together. There's not a lot of shippiness yet, but I appreciate the time and effort the author is putting in to build their friendship and inevitable relationship.
Fic Rec #9: Painting Periwinkle
Why This Must Be Read: Another very adorable fic. Steve is a little bit of a nervous wreck and his crush on Darcy is both thrilling and deeply terrifying to him. I have a soft spot for fic in which the male character is utterly flustered by the fabulous woman he is in love with and this story definitely hits the spot. I genuinely LOL'd at more than a few lines.
Fic Rec #10: Carmine and Watermelon Lip Smackers
Rating/Warning(s): Unrated, but I'd say G
Why This Must Be Read: This is a gorgeous, gorgeous little ficlet. It's a deeply moving look into how Steve eventually gets over Peggy and exactly why he fell in love with Darcy. I'm in love with the prose and the art metaphors. Read it, read it, read it!
Fic Rec #11: Enjoying
Rating/Warning(s): R/NC-17. Warnings for some very sexy times
Why This Must Be Read: From the same author, Darcy and Steve enjoy some lazy Sunday sex. Guh. This drabble isn't very explicit but it is ridiculously hot all the same. I feel compelled once more to praise the author's gorgeous prose and imagery. Delicious and, I have to say it, enjoyable. :P
Fic Rec #12 "Kids Movies" 'verse
Link: Kids Movies
In Between Days
Things We Learned From Wars
Pink and Gold
Rating/Warning(s): Ratings range from K+/PG to M/NC-17. Warnings for explicit sex, violence, and major character death in TWLFW and PaG.
Why This Must Be Read: "Kids Movies" has been rec'd here before but it has since spawned an entire series/universe. I think this may be my favorite portrayal of Darcy and Steve in this particular corner of fandom. This Darcy is brave, whip-smart, and determined with realistic and relatable insecurities and hang-ups. And god, her Steve. Such a fundamentally good man, who's not nearly as naive and fumbling as you'd think, and has some pretty respectable moves. As a reader, you absolutely buy into the depth of their love for each other. This series will make you laugh, swoon, and clutch your chest and weep in utter heartbreak. Highly, highly recommended.
Fic Rec #13: The Darcy Lewis Can't Lose series
Link: The series can be found at the author's website here. See profile for the proper chronological order the stories should be read in.
Rating/Warning(s): Ratings range from K+/PG to M/R.
Why This Must Be Read: This is another delightful series. Darcy sends Steve a retro pin-up calendar she put together, they take some swing dancing lessons, Steve teaches her to box, they buy each other records, and somewhere along the way, they fall in love. I appreciate this particular interpretation of Steve, who's trying to get along in the 21st century and balance his old-fashioned ideas, being a good role model, and wanting to enjoy the present like a normal person. Steve and Darcy are adorable together, as always, but I can't even put into words how much I love the rest of the Avengers and what they add to this series, especially Tony. Go forth and read!
Fic Rec #14: Extra Credit
Why This Must Be Read: Everyday, Steve Rogers sits alone at a table in the cafeteria, looking like the World's Saddest Super Soldier. Darcy takes it upon herself to befriend him and be his pop culture guru. Darcy is irrepressible and I enjoy their friendship and Steve's eventual realization that he's in love with her. Very, very cute.
Fic Rec #15: Five Minutes Longer series
Link: All things being equal, I'd rather be in Philadelphia
Life has its little bonuses
Rating/Warning(s): Ratings range from T/PG-13 to M/R. Warnings for violence and some sensuality.
Why This Must Be Read: The first story in this series has been rec'd here before. Darcy is caught in the middle of a bank robbery and with the help of her taser and a plucky sidekick, the daughter of another hostage, she manages to save the day. In the sequel, Darcy makes good on her promise to take her sidekick, Marisol, to Chuck E Cheese with the Avengers. As you might imagine, there are some hilarious shenanigans, including Marisol manipulating an oblivious Clint, as well as a very sexy scene between Darcy and Steve in a dark corner of the restaurant, oooh lala.
Fic Rec #16: Untitled Darcy/Steve smut fill
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17. Warnings for sexytimes
Why This Must Be Read: Have a smutty PWP palate cleanser. You can never have too much of Steve appreciating the hell out of retro, pin-up girl Darcy, especially when the result is this hot, unf.
Fic Rec #17: Catching Poetry series
Link: The series can be found through the author's catching poetry ficlets tag
Rating/Warning(s): Unrated, but I would say PGish
Why This Must Be Read: After nursing an unrequited crush on Clint (who is all about Natasha), Darcy decides to move on. She never expected Steve Rogers. This is a lovely little series--very dreamy, gentle, and romantic.
Fic Rec #18: What to Expect When You Never Planned on Expecting
Rating/Warning(s): E/NC-17. Warnings for explicit sex
Why This Must Be Read: After a one night stand, Darcy finds out she's pregnant. It's time for Darcy Lewis, immature college student extraordinaire to finally grow up. There's a wide gulf of misunderstanding between Darcy and Steve, but Steve of course, is going to be a stand up and supportive baby daddy. This fic is just beginning, but I'm looking forward to seeing how these two crazy kids will work things out before their own kid finally arrives.
Fic Rec #19: Don't Worry, I'll Make It Good For You
Why This Must Be Read: Darcy and Clint are in the middle of a nerf gun war. Steve gets caught in the middle and becomes Darcy's Prisoner of War. It is definitely as fun as it sounds.
