West Wing recs post.

Because I enjoy being weeks late for something. (And because my internet was out during this challenge.)

1. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Donna Moss/Joshua Lyman, various others.
Fic Title: Buying Time and Nadir
Author: Chai
Link: http://westwing.crossroadfic.com/recs/angst/buying_time1.txt
Rating/Warning(s): R/NC-17, dark themes.
Genre: Angst, romance, au.
WIP?: Complete.

Why This Must Be Read: The West Wing fandom is such an odd duck. There's a lot of really amazing fic that runs the gamut from long and plotty and heavily political, to complete crack. This is one of the better examples of long, human drama. I like both stories quite a bit because they're heavier on the realism and have just enough panache in terms of prose to keep me fascinated. They're hard stories to read because they deal with illness and the emotional rollercoaster that goes with, but they're also so, very worth it.

2. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Donna Moss/Josh Lyman
Fic Title: The Age of Aquarius
Author: Speranza
Link: http://trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Aquarius.html
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17ish.
Genre: Humor, friendship, romance, fluff.
WIP?: Complete.

Why This Must Be Read: Because Speranza rules at her Josh-voice. There are stories where you can just hear the actor speaking those exact lines in that exact situation, and this is one of them. One thing I adore about Josh and Donna as a duo is that they really were living out a screwball 1940's comedy, and this story absolutely nails it. I actually recommend all of Speranza's WW fic, but AoA is an all-time favorite and gives a best over-all idea of the writer's talents. Donut assets!

3. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Donna Moss/Josh Lyman
Fic Title: With Science
Author: yanatya
Link: http://ca.geocities.com/yanatya1/withscience.htm
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17.
Genre: Crack, sci-fi, fluff, humor, smut, romance.
WIP?: Complete!

Why This Must Be Read: Because Yana brings the good crack. You know all those stories where X character wakes up gay? Well, this is kind of like that, but replace 'gay' with 'with super powers' and 'wakes up' with 'looks left and suddenly has'. Still, the main reason I'm recommending this is because this is Donna and Josh dealing with something that is 100% out of their frame of reference and still being 100% themselves about it. Read all her other WW fic too!

4. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Donna Moss/Josh Lyman
Fic Title: Blame It On Cassanova
Author: dianora2
Link: http://dianora.healthyinterest.net/archives/2006/03/blame_it_on_the.html
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17.
Genre: Romance, friendship, fluff, humor, post-ep.
WIP?: Complete.

Why This Must Be Read: I think a lot of my recommendations are going to include the words "IN CHARACTER!!!" and this is definitely one of them. Mind you, this is very, very much from season 7, and the people both Donna and Josh are by that point. As with the above rec, I think y'all should go read all of Dia's other WW fic. (It was SO hard to choose a good general example so I can herd you towards all her other stuff.)

5. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: CJ Cregg/Toby Zeigler, Donna Moss/Josh Lyman, Sam Seaborne/Other
Fic Title: The Syntax of Things Unspoken
Author: ygrawn
Link: http://westwingstories.com/library/stories/ygrawn/syntax.htm
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13, character death.
Genre: Introspection, AU, friendship, angst, romance, humor.
WIP?: Complete.

Why This Must Be Read: Because this is the most beautifully written piece of West Wing fic ever written. Screw that, this is one of the most beautifully written pieces of fiction I've ever read ever. It's breathes on the page and lets its characters be flawed and tired and funny and insane and human. If you don't read another story on this rec list, please, please read this one.

6. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: CJ Cregg/Toby Zeigler, Andrea Wyatt/Toby Zeigler
Fic Title: The Memory-Keeper
Author: ygrawn
Link: http://westwingstories.com/library/stories/ygrawn/memory-keeper.htm
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13.
Genre: Introspection, au, angst, friendship.
WIP?: Complete.

Why This Must Be Read: Like the above recommendation, this story is just so incredibly spot-on perfect it makes me flustered to even write about. This is the CJ that lives in my heart. Strong, funny, sad, broken, unbent, and with more layers than a truck of onions. There's such a carefulness to the language in this story, and the way bits and pieces are revealed slowly. It's a hearbreaker, for certain, but it's also a story that makes you glad to have read it, even while you're trying not to cry.

7. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Donna Moss/Josh Lyman
Fic Title: The After Party
Author: Macha
Link: http://macha.healthyinterest.net/archives/2004/07/the_after_party.html
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17
Genre: Romance, fluff, smut.
WIP?: Complete!

Why This Must Be Read: Because any self-respecting Josh/Donna recs list is absolutely required to have an Inauguration Over There tag, and this one is sweet, hot, adorable, and full of Josh and Donna being dorks. Plus, Macha kicks butt as a writer, and deserves every accolade anyone can throw at her. (Accolades tend to be soft, dontcha know.)

8. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: CJ Cregg/Toby Zeigler
Fic Title: Changed
Author: Docfraiser8
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1597568/1/Changed
Rating/Warning(s): R, secondary character death.
Genre: Angst, au, introspection, friendship, romance.
WIP?: Complete!

Why This Must Be Read: I'm not really a big CJ/Toby reader, despite what my recs are telling you. That being said, this story just stuck with me. It was written pre-season 6 and 7, and the political angle of it is entirely missing, but it's just so... quiet. Different. It's CJ dealing with the death of her father and Toby doing his best to help her with something. It's also years and years of history and memory and regret and trying again. Just lovely.

9. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Donna Moss/Josh Lyman
Fic Title: The Edibles Series
Author: Bramble
Link: http://bramble4.tripod.com/edibles_series.html
Rating/Warning(s): PG->NC-17
Genre: Fluff, humor, smut, romance.
WIP?: Compelte!

Why This Must Be Read: Because it's funny. Silly, delightful, insane, kinky, and completely screwball with gravitas thrown in by complete accident. For real, Bramble's stuff is just breezy and excellent in the way that a truly, truly good chick-lit book is. This stuff is the beach-reading of The West Wing fandom, and it never, ever felt so good!

10. Fandom Category: The West Wing
Pairing: Josh Lyman/Donna Moss, Abbey Bartlet/Jed Bartlet, Zoey Bartlet/Charlie Young
Fic Title: The Joshua Monologues
Author: AIM
Link: http://spitzthecat.tripod.com/monologues.html
Rating/Warning(s): PG->NC17
Genre: Crack, AU, romance, friendship, smut, kidfic.
WIP?: Each story is complete, but the series is unfinished and will probably remain so.

Why This Must Be Read: While this series is very, very much fantasy crack, there are some real moments of grace to it. It's also a pretty enthralling and breezy read, but it's also somewhat experimental. I've not really read another series that's committed so definitively to a style of writing. Namely, it's made up of monologues and bits and pieces of POV work.
