Ship manifesto: Lina Inverse/Gourry Gabriev (Slayers)

First of all, thank you so much to irony_rocks for being very understanding of a business trip I took that prevented me from getting this in on time.

And now, for the good stuff!

Who Lina and Gourry are
Lina Inverse: Lina Inverse is a 15-year-old sorceress who's been on her own for a couple of years by the time the main Slayers series begins. She is many things - a thief, a cheat, a liar, a mercenary, a scholar and she's extremely powerful. Lina always looks out for number one and has earned the reputation of being a bandit killer and a dragon spooker, or dramata. She's small in stature and chest size, but inflates her own ego regarding her looks. She has a quick temper and the ability to incinerate a small mountain in no time flat. She adheres to her own set of morals, which in the end turns out to put her in a hero spotlight. For example, Lina has no problems liberating treasure from a bandit camp - after all, they stole it first. Although she's on an eternal quest to increase her own magical powers, she doesn't give into offers to join forces with Mazoku that could give her this power. She locks away her deeper emotions and tends to be wary about things such as love. She ages throughout the series and is 18 by the end of the novels and roughly 19-20 at the end of the anime.

Gourry Gabriev: Gourry Gabriev is a tall, blond swordsman who is roughly 22 years old when the series begins. He is originally from Elmekia, a desert-like country and has at least one older brother who doesn't like him. Gourry's family holds the Sword of Light, one of the strongest weapons in the Slayers world. It first appears in lore when one of Gourry's ancestors uses it to save Sairaag, one of the major cities on the continent. A fight among Gourry's family members prompted him to take the sword and flee home when he was 17. Sometime during the next five years, Gourry fought in a war and eventually became a wandering mercenary, at some point saving Sairaag in an incident that isn't detailed during the series. It's significance is that he met Sylphiel Nels Lahda, a young priestess that grew to idiolize him. In the novels, Gourry is finally driven to throw away the Sword of Light because it has caused him nothing but grief. He is stopped by a traveling merchant carrying a fishing pole. Together, Gourry and the merchant defeat Mazoku who have come to attack a town and the merchant urges Gourry to do something useful with his sword. Days later, Gourry comes across a young woman surrounded by a gang of 10 men in the middle of the forest -- and thus his life becomes entangled with Lina Inverse's. They grow from her being able to barely tolerate him to him swearing to protect her for the rest of his life.

How I got to ship Lina/Gourry
I was a latecomer to the Slayers fandom. It was one of those series I'd always meant to watch. I got the first novel in English, always intending to read it but never did. I saw the first eight episodes of the anime in 2001, but was too focused on college to really pay attention. It wasn't until four years after I first saw those episodes that I decided it was time to continue. Thus the wonders of Netflix provided me with almost the entire first season at once.

I did not enter Slayers as a Lina/Gourry fan. I never even really paid attention to Gourry, to be honest. Lina captivated me from the get-go with her sheer attitude. She's everything you wouldn't expect in a heroine. She's greedy, selfish, a glutton, and all sorts of things that you wouldn't assign to a series heroine like Kamiya Kaoru from Rurouni Kenshin or Higurashi Kagome from Inuyasha. Lina isn't afraid of anything and isn't exactly the easiest person to be around. Sweet and pleasant don't really describe her. I laughed my head off at her antics and stuck with the series to see what Lina would do next.

When the character of Zelgadiss Greywords was introduced, I found myself liking that pairing instead (and ironically, Gourry himself shipped it a little in the first novel). Thanks to a couple of close friends, I had been spoiled to the ending of Slayers NEXT, the second season, and wondered what kick in the head it took to make Lina like Gourry in that way. When the first arc of the anime was complete, Zelgadiss exited the scene. When he came back after Amelia's introduction, I could see immediately see the Amelia/Zelgadiss pairing, but not Lina/Gourry. It wasn't until the Copy Rezo fight, when Gourry completely loses it on the battlefield when Lina was mortally wounded, that the little lightbulb went on in my head and the pairing suddenly worked. I suddenly picked up the first volume of the novels, the one gathering dust on my shelf, and read it. Then I ran out and grabbed the second and third, the only other ones out at the time. I was completely sold on the pairing.

For a full analysis of why this pairing works, check out the third part to a shipper manifesto I wrote five years ago. Even though we've had new material since then, the arguments still apply.

Fic Recs

Fic Rec #1: Sleep Ends Everything
Author: Plug
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2980865/1/Sleep_Ends_Everything
Rating/Warning(s): K+
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: This takes a look in the coma Lina lands in once the Lord of Nightmares takes over her body at the end of Slayers NEXT. It is aching beautiful and shows not only Lina's devotion and love for Gourry, but her friends as well.

-----

Fic Rec #2: Dream Castle
Author: Hyacynth
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/981015/1/Dream_Castle
Rating/Warning(s): K+
Genre: Drama/Romance
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: A sweet, yet funny story on how Lina comes to realize her feelings for Gourry after he gives her an unusual birthday gift. The emotions portrayed here aren't cloying, and Lina remains perfectly in character throughout everything - even her confession to Gourry at the end. It's really easy to go overboard when writing romance involving Lina, but this one does a great job.

Fic Rec #3: Locks
Author: useyourlove
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/241602
Rating/Warning(s): M, definite smut here
Genre: Romance
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: I've not read many Lina/Gourry stories lately, especially good ones. This story is just amazing. It's a first-time fic, but that shouldn't scare you off. The descriptions are sensual and vivid, but remains true to both characters as well. It evades the tropes that usually come with smut fic for these two and treats it like a natural evolution of their friendship/relationship, which is always an instant rec in my book.

-----

Fic Rec #4: Midnight Blue
Author: Kaitrin
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/850617/1/Midnight_Blue
Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Romance
WIP?: Multi-chaptered, complete

Why This Must Be Read: In the Slayers fandom, if you ship Lina/Gourry, there's about two or three authors that are considered must-reads. Kaitrin is one of them, and this is considered to be her greatest story. After the events of Slayers NEXT, Gourry urges Lina to return to Sairaag to search for something he's lost. But, they manage to figure out all the thorny issues between them that were dropped after NEXT.

-----

Fic Rec #5: Dreamers that Do
Author: Eyebrows obsession
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3236476/1/Dreamers_that_Do
Rating/Warning(s): K+
Genre: General
WIP?: Multi-chaptered, complete

Why This Must Be Read: While the Lina/Gourry romance is a secondary storyline in this fic, the entirety of it is just fantastic. The author takes a really good look at how the removal (or threatened removal) of Gourry from Lina's life would drive her to the brink of doing lasting damage, and their moments together range from the extremely fluffy (matching pajamas as they snuggle in bed) to the extremely poignant and tender.

-----

Fic Rec #6: In Other Words
Author: Rose's.Wings
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6269961/1/In_Other_Words
Rating/Warning(s): K
Genre: Romance
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: This is another fluffy one-shot where Lina realizes her feelings for Gourry, but does it in a way that's believable for her character. The only problem I have with it is the random song insert, but that's because I don't care for song fics. However, the story is good enough that I just skip over the lyrics when I read it.

-----

Fic Rec #7: God's Gambit series
Author: Pairaka
Link: http://c4vct.com/pairaka/gambit/storyarc.htm
Rating/Warning(s): Ranges from T to M with smut and some kink (costumes and bondage). One story does deal with miscarriage, and another with kidnapping.
Genre: Romance
WIP?: Series, Lina/Gourry stories are complete

Why This Must Be Read: Pairaka is considered one of the other essential Lina/Gourry authors in the fandom, and for a time, her God's Gambit series completely centered around their developing relationship. The stories "Moondance" through "Paradise" chronicle the Lina/Gourry relationship, with "Circle's Edge" especially diving into Gourry's perspective on everything. They're very well-written and I feel capture the characters well. There is a M-rated version of "Moondance" that exists somewhere, though I forget where, but there's plenty of smut in the later stories to make up for it.

-----

Fic Rec #8: With This Ring
Author: BeccaStareyes
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/158432
Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Humor
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: This is a hilarious one-shot from Lina's POV where she and Gourry get stuck wearing a pair of magical rings that enable them to hear each other's thoughts. While it might seem cliche, the use of witty dialogue plus the natural banter among the cast makes this story a joy to read.

-----

Fic Rec #9: We Did What!
Author: Yumekage
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2567564/1/
Rating/Warning(s): T (though the rating says M, it's definitely T)
Genre: Humor/Romance
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: Xelloss decides to mess with Lina and Gourry's heads by making them think they slept with each other. It's a good view of how other characters in the series tend to ship Lina and Gourry as much as some of the fans do! The grammar's a little rough, and the story is showing its age, but it's still hilarious.

-----

Fic Rec #10: The Breaking Point
Author: DQBunny
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/116890
Rating/Warning(s): M, definitely contains smut
Genre: Romance
WIP?: One-shot, complete

Why This Must Be Read: This is actually one of my stories, and it's my favorite out of all the Lina/Gourry stories I've written. Lina catches Amelia and Zelgadiss having an intimate moment, which makes her finally acknowledge her own fantasies about Gourry. It has humor, Amelia desperately trying to fix up Lina and Gourry, hot wall sex and more.
