Character Manifesto: Kensi Blye

Fandoms:: NCIS: Los Angeles, briefly NCIS
Character: Kensi Blye
Pairings Included in Manifesto: Kensi Blye/Marty Deeks, Kensi Blye/G Callen

Blurb: Kensi Marie Blye is, in my opinion, the one of the most underrated female characters on television. Many people read her as no-nonsense and/or strictly by-the-book and therefore one-dimensional, but to me she's a chameleon; hard and badass on the outside, but colored by a ribbon of sensitivity and sympathy which is a compelling backdrop to her job as an undercover agent.  She's an Army brat whose father was murdered when she was sixteen (she'd snuck out to see Titanic and returned to find MPs at her house.)  She and her father were best friends, and he taught her to "track, shoot, fix an engine, play poker, wire a house; basically anything you'd teach a son." She doesn't speak much of him, though she did say she tracked down members of the rest of his unit upon joining NCIS, but her investigation soon stalled. She still travels each weekend to visit friends at Camp Pendleton, and also spent time at Camp LeJeune.  She's a little bit of a hoarder -- though tell her that at your own risk -- and speaks English, Spanish and Portguese (which has helped her a few times with less than willing witnesses.)

Upon starting at NCIS and achieving both junior agent and new girl status, she had to do some less than thrilling work, crawling through duct work and donning a bikini to pull their target's notice.  She holds quite a distaste for these kinds of assignments but dulls her complaints, because she's myopic when they work a case; sometimes it feels as though her drive for answers comes from the fact she never got any for her father.

She was engaged once, to a Marine called Jack, who suffered from PTSD and disappeared from her home around December of 2004.  He hasn't been seen since. Her abandonment issues due to her father's death and Jack's leaving have been briefly touched on, bt no one is that strong; I think they're as much a part of her as anything.

She's been partnered twice in her career; her first partner, Dominic Vail, was kidnapped and eventually killed. After his disappearance, she went to his apartment and stoically did his dishes.  It seemed like she was fighting for balance between the risks of the job and the loss of her friend.  After his death, her boss appointed a new LAPD liaison, Marty Deeks, and the two have been paired since.  There's been a marked change in Kensi since Deeks' arrival; though she's still hotly focused, Deeks' playful personality has chipped away slightly at the porcelain of her self-preservation.

So why Kensi? Because there's far, far more to her than meets the eye; her complexity is enthralling.  Just when you think she's just a gun-wielding badass (which, don't get me wrong, she is) she tears up speaking of Jack's disappearance for the first time, as hurt now as she was six years ago when she woke up alone.  Around the same time she shoots a machine gun at a truck carrying a stolen nuclear weapon, she holds tightly to her wounded partner's LAPD's shield, as though the badge is a totem to which she can pray. She's a well-written and compelling case of contrasts, limitless in words to describe her.

Why This Must Be Read Non-linear writing is a challenge at best, but this piece does it -- and does it flawlessly. The tone pulls you in immediately, and the lyricism keeps you there. The suspense is palpable as is the connection between Kensi and Deeks. It's one of those stories in which you forget to breathe, and then when you get it back, the piece takes it right away again.

Why This Must Be Read: When anyone wants recommendations for "NCIS: LA" fic, this is the piece I point them to. It's Kensi and Deeks at three different points in their relationship, tied together with their connection and the desperate need to fall into each other. There's also great insight into both their psyches, and there's an incident in Chapter Three I've never seen in fandom before, and I adore orginality.

Fic Rec: Breaking
Pairing: Kensi Blye/G Callen

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None listed.
WIP? YES
Why This Must Be Read: I'll admit it: I'm a huge Kensi/Deeks shipper. But this story is so compelling that I can't not read it simply because of the pairing. It's a slow burn for Kensi and Callen as her past and their present in the form of a case collide. I'm a huge fan of stories that can balance a budding relationship and a casefic, and this is one that does it, and does it well.

Fic Rec: A Place to Begin

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None listed, but this is a post-"Personal" piece.

Why This Must Be Read: In my humble opinion, this author's work is the bar for which all "NCIS: LA" writers should reach. She just gets the characters like no other; the characterization is absolutely magnificent, and she certainly knows how to set a scene. I love the look into Kensi's psyche and watching her slowly unravel in the aftermath of Deeks' shooting almost as much as I love the resolution. Just an amazing, engaging read.

Fic Rec: Deep

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None listed, but there is drug use and sex in this story.
WIP? YES
Why This Must Be Read The whole draw of "NCIS: LA" is the undercover work. OSP is very, very good at it, and nine times out of ten, they get out of it unscathed. This story is about that tenth time, the assignment they cannot escape. It's a dramatic psychological thriller about what the word 'partner' really means. It just completely sucks you in, so I'd recommend reading this only when you have time to finish the piece. :)

Fic Rec: In the End
Pairing Kensi Blye/G Callen

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None listed.
WIP? YES
Why This Must Be Read This caught my eye because of the established relationship between Kensi and Callen, and very much like "Breaking," the balance of characterization and case is excellent, only this time, the case is Kensi herself; she's arrested for murder, which was a twist I certainly didn't see coming. The pacing is perfect, as are the moments between Kensi and Callen -- and the team as a whole, which is an element I love to see with paired stories, as I feel like the rest of the team can get pushed to the periphery.

Fic Rec: Human Sacrifice
Pairing: Kensi Blye/Marty Deeks
Author: Fictionista48

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Character injury (via torture), allusions to rape
WIP? YES
Why This Must Be Read: I do a Snoopy dance when this story updates, which is ironic given how dark it is. This is the story of when things go very, very wrong, and what people do in the ashes of the aftermath. It is indeed difficult to read the first time through, but rereading the chapters highlights the beacon of self-reliance and the will to survive, both emotionally and physically. It evokes every emotion imaginable; turns you inside out until you forget which way is up, but to me, that's the hallmark of a good story.

Fic Rec: On a Shelf
Pairing: Kensi Blye/Marty Deeks, Kensi Blye/G Callen UST
Author: zinha

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None listed.
WIP? YES
Why This Must Be Read: I have to admit, the style of this story -- listing things about each character as a list -- threw me off. But when I delved in to the revelations the author came up with, I was hooked. This is slightly more gen than romance, but the insight here is just fabulous. This piece includes most of the "NCIS: LA" team, which is always a treat.

Fic Rec: Heal
Pairing: Kensi Blye/Marty Deeks
Author: rk007
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6887188/1/Heal
Rating: G
Warnings None listed, but this is a follow-up to "Personal."
WIP? No
Why This Must Be Read: Oh, the deluge of post-Personal submissions. This one, though, is the best by far. It's insightful, in character, lyrical: all the things you could ever want in a piece. I also love the fact that the romance is a slow burn, understanding that to move forward you must first address your present. They are adults here, mindful of both their pasts, and they inch forward cautiously -- and appropriately.

Fic Rec: Karma
Pairing: Kensi Blye/Marty Deeks
Author Jessica237
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6432272/1/Karma
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: No, but this is a missing moment piece from "Anonymous."
WIP? No
Why This Must Be Read: This is my go-to fic to pull me out of a funk. It's sweet and funny, subtle in its romance and perfect in its characterization. I love seeing a softer side of Kensi, but always expect her to retain a little bit of her sharpness, and she does here -- and perfectly.
