Character: Bonnie Bennett
Pairings Included in Manifesto: Bonnie Bennett /Damon Salvatore, Bonnie Bennett/Stefan Salvatore, Bonnie Bennett/Tyler Lockwood.
Blurb: [Bonnie Bennett is, at the mere age of seventeen, the type of young woman I’ve always wanted to become. She is brave, generous, smart, compassionate and sweet-natured. Her spirit is pure and selfless, and she is the most loyal friend anyone might wish to have. Yet, she is not weak – her purity and compassion only make her stronger, both emotionally and mentally, because she is also cool-headed, passionate, headstrong.
Her friends are her Achille’s heel, yet she is not afraid to voice unpopular opinions to them or to take a standing that can make her less welcome to their eyes. She is the kind of person who asks very little of those she loves, yet she demands a lot from herself. Across the first two seasons of TVD, Bonnie struggles to accept the fact she is a witch – with all the countless delights and dangers that come from this – and willingly embraces the role of protector of Mystic Falls, despite her relative inexperience, the absence of any positive guidance in her life, and her feelings of grief and anger over her Grams’ death.
Bonnie shoulders the responsibility of being an hero not out of a wish to accomplish something great with her powers, but out of the awareness that if she is not ready to do this, nobody else will. There’s something beautifully tragic in that, and yet the reason Bonnie Bennett is so easy to love is that she stays wonderfully, approachably human, despite all her heroic qualities. To quote Julie Plec ‘Bonnie is flawed and real’ with her justified diffidence toward vampires, her pride, her stubbornness, her fire.
I love this girl so much than I might ship her with virtually anyone but… my OTP IS Damon Salvatore/Bonnie Bennett.
Why, you ask?
For one, I ship Bonnie and Damon because they are perfectly matched: in temper, personality, power and wit. They balance each other out. Bonnie above-her-years wisdom is a pleasant contrast to Damon’s childlike egocentrism, just like his wilderness of spirit is to her quiet intensity. They are both very passionate characters, and fiercely loyal to those they care about –two traits that will make then a hell of couple someday. Whenever they share a scene, regardless of how short, I can literally feel the air sizzling with their chemistry. Bonnie doesn’t let him off easy, and she is not afraid to stand up to him, murderous vampire or not, and you can see Damon respects her for that, and her strength and integrity. I think he truly needs someone like her in his life, given his past: someone who will set boundaries and won’t be fooled by his antics, refusing to stand by and be his enabler, but also who will have his back, it doesn’t matter what.
Bonnie’s mental and emotional attitude toward the tragedy that suddenly grips her previously pacific hometown can be beautifully summarized by this poem:
"Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave
Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned"
— Edna St. Vincent Millay,
Bonnie sees one of her best friends brutalized by a vampire, is attacked and kidnapped, loses her grandmother – her rock in this world- and few among her teachers, friends, acquaintances yet she is not resigned to the ugliness. She sees them falling one by one, yet she doesn’t submit, not to vampires and not to the darkness inside her. She keeps risking, caring, protecting those she loves, fighting for her beliefs. She embraces her pain, her anger, her fear and uses them as a fuel to grow stronger, fiercer, more determined.
All this while remaining a beautifully sane, well-balanced, warm-hearted person and despite a not very happy family life. Bonnie Bennett is the poster child for true girl power… how can you not adore her?
I know that there are TVD fans who heatedly despise her (mainly because she doesn’t doormat for anyone, much less the main triangle) but… I don’t get it. At all. This witch is awesome.
Fic Rec #1 - Best Drama Story: Almost Too Late
Why This Must Be Read: A near-death experience finally convinces Bonnie that Damon is in love with her, allowing her to both realize her feelings and stop pushing him away. It’s tender, moving, and very IC despite this.
Fic Rec #2 - Best Action/Adventure Story: Unseen
Pairing: Bonnie/Damon (slightly), other canon pairings
Why This Must Be Read: This is a series of unseen or alternate scenes from aired episodes. Be forewarned that the chapters are not connected, but the Bonnie voice is absolutely flawless.
Runners up: 'Texts from Last Bite' by irishcookie, whereas Bonnie realizes that living her cell number to Damon wasn’t her brightest idea:
'Hallmark Rejects' by irishcookie which paints a year's worth of holidays - Damon and Bonnie style : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6699413/1/Hallmark_Rejects
Fic Rec #3 - Best Alternate Reality/Universe Story: Stranger than Fiction
Pairing: Bonnie/Tyler Lockwood, Bonnie/Damon Salvatore
Rating/Warning(s): M for sexual situations
Why This Must Be Read: It picks up after ‘Fool Me Once’, when Bonnie is still dealing with her grief over Grams and it assumes that she and Tyler are close friends from early childhood. Bonnie and Tyler’s relationship starts warming up toward romance right while Damon grows more and more determined to have the witch for himself. Despite the unique deviousness Damon displays in this fic, the real point of strength of this tale is the attention and space given to portray those strong bonds of friendship that tie Bonnie to Caroline, Elena, Stefan. Also, the mythology spun chapter by chapter where witches, vampires and werewolves are concerned is amazing.
Runner up : Nightlight by JezziBness : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5885130/1/Nightlight
Which is a Twilight version where Damon and Bonnie are the main characters.
How We Play by charrrmed : Bonnie is in college and she and Damon are on the verge of something more. Damon asks her to play pool, and their time is interrupted by Bonnie's friend Luka. This is a take on how Damon would have handled to interruption.
Fic Rec #4 - Best Angst Story: Drowning
Rating/Warning(s): pg, character death
Why This Must Be Read: The Tomb spell in episode 2.10 killed Bonnie, and every single member of the gang reflects on the 6th anniversary of her death. This fic makes for a very intriguing, tears-and-anger-inspiring kind of reading, because it strikes very close to home.
Runner up: ‘Putting Back the Pieces of Us’ by Lady Gawain (Mature rating for sex and violence) in which Damon and Bonnie embark on a secret, mildly destructive sexual relationship after Elena’s death, yet they manage to twist the affair in a chance for healing and falling in love.
Fic Rec #5 - Best Fluff Story: Bloodshots
Author: Farie Insignia
Why This Must Be Read: Nobody writes the genre Humor/Romance for this pairing like this author does.
Runners up: The Wall Of Separation by charrrmed - I'm not sure it's quite fluff, because Damon and Bonnie are not exactly soft on each other here, but it puts them in the interesting predicament of discussing a poignant 'relationship issue', aka Damon's tendency to feed during sex.
If, instead, pure fluff is what you are going for, the ideal pick for you is the fantastic 'Open Your Eyes' by TwistedSky - whereas, in a distant future, Bonnie is getting married to Tyler, and Damon realizes he can't let her to go through with it, regardless of his inability to pinpoint why:
Fic Rec #6 - Best Hurt/Comfort Story: A Spinning Carousel
Pairing: hints of Bonnie/Damon, Bonnie/Stefan, Bonnie/Matt, Stefan/Elena
Why This Must Be Read: It’s Bonnie gradually picking up the pieces after the events of ‘Fool me Once’, going through every stage of mourning and coming to terms, gradually, with Grams’ loss. It’s an intense, sad, angry process you can only enjoy because it’s written perfectly.
Runners up: ‘It Was You’ and its sequel ‘The Fort’ where Bonnie and her friend Caroline reconnect after the events of ‘Brave New World’.
Fic Rec #7 - Best PWP/Kink Story: How Bonnie Regained Her Spontaneity
Why This Must Be Read: It’s Bonnie getting roped by Damon, during one UST charged argument, into proving that she can still be spontaneous and that she certainly doesn’t need sleeping with him to take off the edge. Extremely sexy story.
Runners up: Bloodletting by femmenoire: http://community.livejournal.com/thewitchgoddess/17172.html#cutid1
The Charm Is Broken Utterly by ninhursag:
A Cleansing by charrrmed:
The Natural Order Of Things by Lady Gawain:
those are all Bonnie/Damon shots but if you feel like trying a credible Stefan/Bonnie story, ‘I’ve taken A Good Look’ by Snagging is your kind of reading:
It’s a steamy AU ending to ‘Miss Mystic Falls’ and it has a pg13 sequel, equally entertaining, ‘Alliance’, where Stefan and Bonnie deal with their new connection’s repercussions:
Fic Rec #8 - Best Long Story: What Lies Beneath
Author: Asher Monroe
Rating/Warning(s):M for sexual situations.
Why This Must Be Read: It's wonderfully in character, irresistibly well-written and a classic among Bonnie/Damon fans. This story interweaves beautifully with Tvcanon of Season 1 and 2, describing very truthfully Damon as a man who wants simply everything, and most particularly what he can't have, yet he 's able of genuine, deep passion. Bonnie stands out as a strong woman in the very difficult position of standing by him (or up to him) while dealing with both his psychosis and his stubborn, selfdestructive pursuit of 'other things'. Their relationship here is complex and ever growing, and it only grows stronger through Damon's struggles to escape it and Bonnie's determination to hold on her identity and self-respect.
Runners up: Hard To Be A Saint in the City by Mari, which I've already recced elsewhere but I can't avoid bringing up again, because it has both Damon and Bonnie down to the T, during one epic roadtrip that brings them far closer than either of them expected. This fic is made unique from the way it explores hidden facets of those characters- what Damon has been looking for in Katherine, both sexually and emotionally, and Bonnie's restless reaching for control and belief she can hold on under duress. It's also impressive that during this journey Bonnie and Damon don't just connect, but manage to learn a lot from each other, which is something I want to see onscreen someday really, really bad:
Fic Rec #9 - Best Short Story: Dreams at night
Why This Must Be Read: It delves a bit into Bonnie’s feelings of loss and guilt after Grams’ death.
Runner up: Magic by Orphan Account, pg – it’s a one-shot that portrays a beautiful scene between Bonnie and Elena in the hospital, after the closing of episode 1.22
Or from the same author, ‘Feelings’: http://archiveofourown.org/works/48465
It’s a delightful flirty, coupley moment between Damon and Bonnie, where Bonnie wonders why, during those first meetings, Stefan felt like Death and Damon did not.
Fic Rec #10 - Best Overall Romantic Story: It Goes Like…
Why This Must Be Read: Bonnie and Damon throught their difficult journey from unlikely allies to lovers, caught in the moment when Bonnie realizes it’s no longer hatred or lust, but love. It’s deliciously touching.
From the same author, runners up: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6025525/1/The_Enemy_of_My_Enemy
And its Sequel : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6121544/1/Half_In_Love_With_Pretty_Girls
And the unforgettable, very vivid ‘Hear My Call’ by nicola de lenfent, where all Bonnie wants is summoning Grams’ ghost and all she obtains is some strange side effects that push her closer to Damon Salvatore : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6554690/1/Hear_My_Call
