Dawson's Creek, 2 recs, Pacey/Joey

I saw this pairing requested so thought I'd pitch in with two of my favourites.

Fandom Category: Dawson's Creek
Pairing: Pacey Witter/Joey Potter
Fic Title: Don't Change a Thing
Author: mandmworks
Link: Part One / Part Two
Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre:
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read:
This fic has two things that, in my usual fic-reading habits, should really count against it. Firstly, I have a really short attention span and rarely read fics that are over two or three thousand words long. Secondly, it's post-series Pacey/Joey. I've tried to read so many post-series P/J pieces and stopped because the author just hasn't got them right; either they're no different to teenage Pacey and Joey, or their adult voices and mannerisms don't bear resemblance to canon. It's a difficult balance to get right. This piece however? I think gets them spot on. Perfect. So perfect I don't even notice the 6,000+ words going by. The first time I read it I even ignored the Google - Inbox (1) tab in my browser until I finished. Pacey and Joey are moving to a new place and Joey has a present for Pacey, one that demonstrates how she feels, why she feels it and how she got to feeling that way. The fic fills in a few details on what happens after the finale - logistics, reasonings, feelings. All expertly linking to and referencing canon, which I just think is pure genius.

Fic Title: The Easy Kill

Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Angst
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read:
This fic has a few things that niggle me about it, which I'll deal with first. One is the first person viewpoint, which actually works really well for the style of the piece, is Pacey's narrative and I'm not sure the author gets his voice right the entire way through. In places it's absolutely spot on, but there are times when it doesn't seem like it's Pacey telling you the story in words and phrases he would use. Another thing is that, well, I warn you - it's angsty; which is fine, I love a bit of angst, it's just that in places it seems slightly over the top and a bit melodramatic. There's also a weird confusion of tense going on in some sentences towards the beginning. Lastly, I don't know if the sudden tonal change at the end works. I just think it should have been a bit more subtle. BUT, saying all that, I completely love this fic. It's so well written that I can ignore all the faults I just mentioned. The ideas and imagery contained within it are fantastic and the spin the author puts on Pacey and Joey's conversation in the Icehouse in the finale and where they go with it is a brilliant idea. Similarly to 'Don't Change a Thing', the author references canon superbly and uses it to inform and strengthen their story really well. This fic made me see the Pacey/Joey relationship from a whole new angle and if an author can do that? Well worth reading, definitely.
