Harry Potter - Hermione Granger/Severus Snape

Fandom Category: Harry Potter
Pairing: Hermione Granger/Severus Snape

Earlier this month, sinistercircus posted a Ship Manifesto for Hermione Granger/Severus Snape. I missed the boat on that. But I thought I could provide a different point of view, with different recs, since not everyone likes a given ship for exactly the same reasons.

Why did I fall so hard for this ship? I think it's because it contains so many of the tropes that I relish. Not that every SS/HG story has every one of these, but many of them have several.

Tall, Dark and Snarky

Severus Snape falls into a category of character that I love: the sarcastic cynical anti-hero, often brilliant in his own field, who has no patience for idiots or idealists, but does heroic things anyway, and is honourable in his own way. Kerr Avon would be the first of these for me, but there's also Dr. Gregory House, and to a lesser degree, Mr. Darcy and Mr. Rochester. So that's why I like the Snape part of the pairing. Hermione is no idiot, but she's often an idealist, and that makes her a challenge to him (just like Blake is a challenge to Avon, or Cameron's idealism is a challenge to House's cynicism).

Why This Must Be Read: One of the things that impressed me about this story is that this Snape is prickly, difficult and hard to know, and he remains prickly, difficult and hard to know, even when he and Hermione slowly fall in love with each other. Another thing that is fascinatingly different about this story is that one can measure their initial attraction even before they know it themselves, not by obsession or words of love, but by how they unintentionally hurt each other with careless words, because what the other person thinks matters to them, when before, it didn't. For Hermione, unearthing the layers of Severus Snape is like finding a crystal ball in a field of nettles; things become clearer, but they hurt while they do so. Things are never as black-and-white as she thought they were when she was a child.

Silent Faithfulness

Severus Snape, enduring so much because of his love of Lily, and never telling anyone, and probably willing to take his secret to the grave if it hadn't been necessary to let Harry know. Also, there are some SS/HG stories set during the war which put Hermione into that position also; having faith in Severus, being faithful, but not being able to tell anyone that he's a good guy because she has to protect his secrets.

Why This Must Be Read: Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's secret plan to protect Professor Snape. How? By secretly marrying Snape, and being Snape's contact in the Order. This is spy thriller as well as a romance. It is full of angst; full of trust and faith and love, doubt and worry and fear; things hidden, things unspoken, secrets and risks and secret messages; telling the truth with lies, telling lies with the truth; things to live for which are the very things Our Heroes are most fearful of losing.

Friendship and Mutual Respect

I'm more of a friendshipper than a 'shipper. But that doesn't mean I dislike romance, it's that I want my romances to be built on friendship. While SS/HG certainly has its share of "lust at first sight" stories, there are also many of them which go the friendship route. I think part of the reason for that is that with Snape and Hermione, their nature is such that they are more likely to have a meeting of the minds first before they have a meeting of the hearts. They are both brilliant, intellectual, logical, studious; the realm of the mind is what they have in common, while in the realm of the heart they are more different. Thus I think the most plausible progression of their relationship is mutual respect, then friendship, and that possibly followed by love. And I like that a lot.

Why This Must Be Read: This has one of the things I love: a very slow-growing awkward friendship between Severus and Hermione. Snape is so very Slytherin; he approaches the problem of Hermione side-on. It never occurs to him that while his goal is to make her trust him so that he can fob the problem off on someone else, the consequences of his actions are likely to make them friends. As for Hermione, she is observant and compassionate, and finds a kind of peace in the dungeons; she needs a friend because she's the only one of the Trio to have returned to Hogwarts for 7th Year. Of course, this relationship is by no means smooth sailing; there is misunderstanding and hurt aplenty. I know a friendshippy story is awesome when I feel like cheering when they have their first hug. Fear not, this is a romance too, it is just a friendship first.

Character Growth and Redemption

Both Severus and Hermione have faults and a certain amount of immaturity. Hermione is still only a young woman when canon comes to a close. Severus is a selfish bastard who holds onto grudges like they're precious stones and is unable to forgive anyone, including himself.

This not only gives a great potential for character growth, it makes it a requirement, because both of them need to grow up before they can grow together (whether that be in romance or in friendship).

In Snape's case, we're also likely to get a focus on redemption as well, because he has so much darkness, so much that needs forgiveness. Redemption is one of those things that I adore in a story, whether it is forgiveness and renewal or penance and making amends.

Rating/Warning(s): Adult, Sex
Genre: Romance, Drama
WIP?: Complete

Why This Must Be Read: After the war is over, Hermione marries Snape (who is in Azkaban) in order to skirt the requirements of the new "Marriage Law". Hermione's characterisation is interesting; driven, passionate about her work (but initially, not passionate about anything else). Snape, for his part, is sharp and ornery and Slytherin all the way; but also bound up in what he considers to be his penance for all the blood on his hands. So many good things about this story. Characterisation, turns of phrase, depths, heights, angst, humour, character growth, repentance, atonement, and delightful original characters.

Mind-Powers

I'm a sucker for stories with psi powers in them; mind-reading, telepathy, telempathy and so on. HP canon gave us Legilimency and Occlumency, and with Snape being accomplished at both of these, it's no surprise that there will be stories that use that. But even better than that, you get the occasional story that takes these things further than canon did, and you get actual two-way telepathy, or empathic bonds, and other fun things like that. I like it a lot, especially when such things bring about a closer understanding between the characters.

Fic Rec #5: Cursed
Author: Bccaw
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4601682/1/Cursed
Rating/Warning(s): Teen
Genre: Drama, Romance
WIP?: Complete

Why This Must Be Read: Hermione wakes up after the final battle paralyzed in the infirmary. She has been cursed by Voldemort, and Snape is the only one who can save her. Strange as that may be, the truth is much stranger. This story strongly features Legilimency, as Snape must enter Hermione's mind in order to communicate with her. But what makes it worth reading is the way the mutual gratitude and respect between Snape and Hermione develops into trust, faithfulness, self-sacrifice and love. A twist in this story is that Legilimency is considered to be a Dark Art rather than a rare but neutral ability. That adds some interesting complications.

Culture Clash

The Wizarding World is a completely different culture, and some SS/HG stories explore this wonderfully. Probably some HP stories in general do so also, but I can't remember if I've read any which do.

Why This Must Be Read: Awesome worldbuilding. This story turns what we thought about the Wizarding World on its head, and adds so much depth and wealth of tradition to it, something mythic and full of symbolism.

Angst Makes the Happy Ending Sweeter

While SS/HG fanfic has its share of dark-fic, fluff and pr0n, it also has its share of stories that are filled with angst and misunderstandings and sacrifice and woundedness, in which it all comes out right in the end; even if not happily, at least hopefully. And I like that.

Why This Must Be Read: This is so well written. The present-tense gives it an immediacy as well as an uncertainty about how it will end. Sorrow and loss permeates this story like cold soaks through a rainy week. The images and words that begin each section are visual poetry. Yes, this is full of angst, but hope and love shine through like breaks in the cloud - and then the author pulls the rug from underneath us again. Sunlight and Moonlight, clouds and storms, the imagery weaves its way through the story. The characterisation of Snape and Hermione is what makes this even better; they are far from simple, and that complexity shines through even when memory is missing. The complexity and the love.

Epic Stories Are Epic

There are some fandoms which seem to have a penchant for people writing long epics with sprawling character-driven plots... and Harry Potter fandom seems to be one of them.
While I enjoy drabbles and vignettes as much as the next person, I particularly like long plotty stories that I can sink my teeth into. Even if they tempt me to stay up far too late reading them.

Word Count: 294,155

Why This Must Be Read: Forced by a Ministry decree to marry, seventh-year student Hermione Granger decides to marry the one eligible wizard who did not ask for her--the horrid but powerful Severus Snape.
Hermione: starts off a short-sighted silly know-it-all, but becomes a brilliant, brave lioness, determined, fierce, loyal, vulnerable, tested and true.
Snape: not one whit less greasy, nasty, sarcastic or guilt-ridden than he is in canon; so very Slytherin, with multiple motives for his deeds, and multiple meanings for his words; and yet also passionate, honourable, brilliant, driven, strong... and loving (even though he would never admit it, even to himself).
Dumbledore: with an eye on the Greater Good, he can lose sight of what really matters.
Voldemort: more interesting than most portrayals, this Voldemort is more cunning and less of a madman, one who leads into temptation rather than forcing the unwilling.
This story features: Winchester Cathedral, Hogwarts: A History, the proper brewing of a cup of tea, wild magic, Anglican theology, the multiple meanings of "bastard", sex as sacrament, navigating a nest of vipers, Legilimency, potions, tests, hexes, rumours, vows, howlers, and lots of lists. It is a fantastic ride, full of highs and lows, angst, despair and joy, deception and misunderstandings, mistakes, guilt, forgiveness and even grace.
