Blurb: Jeff and Annie are the unexpected, and I think that's what really drew the fandom to them. Jeff's a slacker, Annie's a high achiever. Jeff's a cynic, Annie's naive. Jeff's laid back, Annie's uptight. Jeff has a gigantic ego, Annie is terribly insecure. Jeff's nearing middle age, and Annie's just starting her adulthood. They appear to be opposites in every way, but at the same time they both completely understand where each other are coming from. They want similar things and they both go about getting want they want in similar ways. They can talk to each other openly and just be themselves without worrying about being judged or getting a lecture. When they're together, they bring out the best in each other. They steer each other in the right direction without much effort at all and become better people simply for having known each other. They were not set up as the show's OTP, and in fact the show originally had no intention of inserting romantic subtext between them. Football, Feminism, and You was the first episode that featured heavy Jeff/Annie interaction and we got to see that deep down these two seemingly opposite characters were very much alike and knew each other's motivations better than anyone, and it was clear that they had a very natural chemistry there, but no one ever thought that anything would come of it, because clearly Jeff would forever be into Britta. But then Debate 109 happened and the fandom exploded. We got googly-eyed looks at Annie from Jeff, UST of the most deliciously awkward kind, and a ridiculously hot kiss initiated by Annie in order to win the debate, and this kiss completely threw Jeff for a loop. Annie was suddenly put on Jeff's radar, much to his discomfort, and because Jeff so genuinely cares about Annie, he really doesn't want to have these kinds of feelings for her, but when he's with her, it just feels right. They're the unexpected.
Fic Rec #1: Home
Summary: Graduation 2013, complete with flashbacks to the past four years.
Why This Must Be Read: I love absolutely everything from this author, but this one is my favorite. It's long and beautifully developed and the pacing is so utterly perfect. I love how this fic developed them as friends first, but at the same time there was always this underlying romantic tension between them that made them finally getting together so satisfying. I loved the use of flashbacks in this, how she matured both Jeff and Annie so believably, and how she made the Jeff/Britta and Annie/OMC romances significant without deterring from the Jeff/Annie romance (and in fact emphasized how right Jeff/Annie was without demeaning those other relationships). In addition to the Jeff/Annie romance being carried out so perfectly, I utterly adored how well she wrote the ensemble bits, because in a Community fic, the ensemble is just as important as the pairing that you're writing for, and this fic nailed it. It was wonderful. Such a delightful read.
Fic Rec #2 Sink or Swim
Why This Must Be Read: This is actually a really great group piece with a Jeff/Annie slant. The group interaction is so freaking hilarious, particularly any part with Pierce, and the Jeff/Britta friendship is written so incredibly perfectly (the beginning literally made me laugh out loud), and Abed was pretty spot-on which is hard to do in fic, and Troy, oh, Troy, he was great. And the Jeff/Annie, GUH, so beautiful. They were very much in character, and it was angsty yet so very them. As for the actual plot of the fic, the whole gang is gathered at Pierce's lake house for a 4th of July barbecue, Troy and Abed decide to make a horror movie about vampire mermen, and Jeff and Annie get stranded together on a boat after spending most of their time trying to avoid each other. It is brilliant.
Fic Rec #3: I tried to be chill (but you're so hot that I melted)
Why This Must Be Read: This fic is just delightful in every way. I utterly adore the shifting POVs, and their voices are so spot-on that it blows you away. There is one moment in this fic where Jeff does something that, if it was anyone else, it would probably be the epitome of insignificant, but because it was Jeff, thinking of Annie, it was somehow the most romantic gesture known to man. You'll know the part when you get to it. The entire fic was just so genuinely sweet and them that it had me smiling like a loon all day. Plus, the narration and dialog is hilarious. Such a great fic.
Fic Rec #4: Sophomore Year
Why This Must Be Read: An epic that totally convinces me on every level that Jeff/Annie can and will work in canon if given the chance. Only, you know, the show would make it less angsty (but I love my angst, especially Jeff angst, and this fic delivered on that so beautifully). I was laughing out loud through so many parts of this fic, not only from the Jeff/Annie banter but also from the ensemble. The story was wonderfully plotted out and the pacing was perfection. Definitely a great read.
Fic Rec #5: don't spit on my cupcake and tell me it's frosting
Rating/Warning(s): (not rated, though I would probably put it in the PG or PG-13 category)
Summary: Set in an imaginary season 2. Britta gets a new love interest. Annie meddles. There's a trial.
Why This Must Be Read: This is actually a Britta centric fic, but the Jeff/Annie is littered throughout the entire thing and it is so, so fantastic. This fic really is like watching an episode, and I love how natural the established Jeff/Annie relationship feels. If the show was to actually come back with Jeff and Annie as a couple (which it won't), I suspect that this is exactly how it would do it, and coming from Britta's POV just makes it all the more hilarious. I love it so very much. A must-read for all.
Fic Rec #6: On Being Felicity (Or, Annie Edison Likes the Simplicity of Lists)
Why This Must Be Read: One of the most popular features of Jeff/Annie fic is text message conversations, and this fic just takes it a step further by employing a ridiculous desktop background for Annie that makes you crack up laughing the second you see it. I love the format of this fic, and the Annie POV was perfection, and the Annie/Vaughn bit was utterly hilarious, and the fic itself is simply delightful.
Fic Rec #7: Even Twinkies Expire Sometime, Or: The Repercussions of Random Kissing
Summary: In which kissing is misinterpreted, hole punches are dangerous, Annie has a bountiful list of reasons for her behaviour, and Jeff has a tough, tough time.
Why This Must Be Read: This was the very first Jeff/Annie fic to ever be written, and to this day it's still one of my all-time favorites. It was written directly after Debate 109, and the characterization of the entire ensemble is pretty amazing considering the author only had nine episodes to go on. The Jeff/Annie tension is so, so palpable and so good. Oh, I love this fic.
Fic Rec #8: Truth or Dare
Why This Must Be Read: This one is a pre-established relationship fic, but at the same time, we get these little flashbacks that give us an idea of how they've gotten to where they are now, but it's mostly commentary in Annie's mind as she's playing Truth or Dare with Britta and Shirley. Britta and Shirley don't know about Jeff and Annie, and... things come out, and there's awkwardness, and hilarity, and angst, and confusion, and fluff, and OH how I loved this one.
Fic Rec #9: Temporary
Why This Must Be Read: This is quite a different take on the post-finale scenario, and it's one of the few porn-ish fics in the fandom. It's beautifully written and kind of twisted, but I love how they both seem to look forward to their time, when everything and everyone else can disappear and it's just them.
Fic Rec #10: like to tell you all I want is now
Why This Must Be Read: Of all the post-finale fics that came out, this was the one that really satisfied me. This was everything that I wanted for Jeff and Annie after that unexpected kiss. It captures that peace between Jeff and Annie so beautifully, how they just enjoy being around each other, how they always seem to flawlessly know what the other needs at the exact moment that they need it, and the prose are almost poetic in a way. I love how there are no expectations in this. It's just Jeff and Annie being Jeff and Annie.
