Pairing: Abby Sciuto/Leroy Jethro Gibbs
Blurb: One thing I love about this pairing is that it's so completely open to interpretation. There are those who interpret Abby and Gibbs' relationship as a potentially romantic one, while others see it as a kind of familial connection. In my case, I prefer the former interpretation, but again, that's the beauty of it all, you can go in either direction.
In no particular order...
Fic Rec #1: Anatomy of Sleep
Author: Formidable Opponent
Why This Must Be Read: A beautiful set of one-shots all revolving around the subject of sleep, hence the title. Here are Gibbs and Abby in all their glory, from one watching the other dose to one offering comfort in the other's darkest times.
Fic Rec #2 Battle of Thrills
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17, for explicit content
Why This Must Be Read: Okay, seriously? Because this is probably one of the hottest Abby/Gibbs stories ever. To quote chirugal's choice of summary: Tease. Tempt. Tremble. But don't touch. It's enough to make any fan of the pairing go cross-eyed, even after you've read it a half-dozen times.
Fic Rec #3: Letting Go
Why This Must Be Read: The Season 6 episode Heartland is a bit of a fan-favorite, and this fic is probably one of my favorite post-ep/missing scene fics ever. It also provides a little origin for Abby giving Jackson Gibbs that hug in the final minutes of the episode (not that Abby needs an excuse to hug someone). Both Abby's and Jackson's thoughts are distinctive in this short story, and the story just exudes a special warmth, not at all dissimilar to the Gibbs men themselves.
Fic Rec #4: Who Are You?
Author: Enthusiastic Fish
Why This Must Be Read: A great pre-series ficlet featuring Abby and Gibbs' first meeting. The fic is more friendship than anything, obviously, but there is that special spark between them, and it's marvelous. The voices of both characters feel remarkably close to the real thing, to the point you could almost imagine the lines being spoken by the actors.
Fic Rec #5: Give It To Me
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17, very minor D/S
Why This Must Be Read: An absolutely gorgeous story that starts out with Abby demanding that Gibbs' give her her Caf-Pow! back and then evolves into something much, much more. This story is the author's first and only Abby/Gibbs fic, but I think I speak for practically everyone who's ever read it when I say that she should write more, because she nailed both characters perfectly.
Fic Rec #6: Expectations
Why This Must Be Read: A great mix of Abby/Gibbs friendship and romance, the story does a great job capturing Gibbs' voice and thoughts as he and Abby settle in to mourn a fallen friend.
Fic Rec #7: Nostalgia
Why This Must Be Read: Another of chirugal's amazing stories, this story features a series of "snapshots", as the author refers to it, featuring Gibbs and Abby's relationship over the span of decades. chirugal does an amazing job showing their evolution, from their uncertain, rocky beginning to the love that grew and became a cornerstone for them both. Plus, there's one flashback in particular featuring the events of the fifth season episode Ex-File that I have taken into my own personal canon. It totally happened, but got cut from the episode! An outstanding story, and a personal favorite. In all honesty, you should probably read all of chirugal's stories, they're so good. It's been a strain to limit myself to just these two stories on the list.
Fic Rec #8: Made to be Broken
Rating/Warning(s): ranging from PG to NC-17 for explicit content
Why This Must Be Read: A series of episode tags that link all of the events from Judgment Day in Season 5 to Rule Fifty-One in Season 7 together. This series was among the first stories I read for this pairing and indeed the entire fandom, and it became one of the ones that all other fics are judged by. It brings everything together in an Abby/Gibbs light, making sense of things that are never fully explored or explained in canon. Wonderful by any measure of the word.
Fic Rec #9: Sanctuary
Why This Must Be Read: One of many excellent tags for the third season episode Bloodbath. Gibbs informs Abby in no uncertain terms that she should come to him if she's ever in that kind of a situation, regardless if she thinks the guy is harmless or that Gibbs will beat him to a pulp with a baseball bat. Gibbs through Abby's eyes is perfectly in character, and Abby's thoughts prove just how attuned she is to him. A lovely one-shot.
Fic Rec #10: Not the Hair that's Red
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17 for explicit content
Why This Must Be Read: A very humorous one-shot that never fails to make me laugh. Tony walks in on a private moment, and thus is made to suffer the consequences. Abby finds the entire thing hysterically funny. Gibbs, not so much. Adorable.
