Why This Must Be Read: I may be biased because this was written for me, but...it's kind of perfect. Post-movie, Sarah is strong and uncertain all at once while Kyle struggles with the new world and the loss of his old one, and it's just so beautifully done. I love how little they're both able to express themselves, and how well they understand each other anyway.

Why This Must Be Read: This story has a similar premise to the first one, and it's equally insightful when it comes to the characters' relative youth and emotional inexperience. The author takes into account that Sarah's almost as new to this timeline as Kyle is—jumping from 1984 to 2017 is a pretty big leap—and her ongoing resentment of her alleged destiny, and the results are a wonderful coda to the film.

Why This Must Be Read: Back in the day, I honestly held out that Chloe and Lex would pair up more often on Smallville. Sadly, this wasn't to be. However, this fic goes a long way to satisfying the desire to see these two as friends who enjoy each other's company. The fic is wonderful and touches on so many character traits that I loved in these two. Plus it combines two of my favorite things: banter and sweet, sexy moments.

Why This Must Be Read: Peter and Olivia are exposed to a chemical Walter is experimenting on. The descriptions of synesthesia are psychedelic and overwhelming:

He had the sensation of cold space all around him, extending out to the stars and beyond. The cold seemed to be licking at him like a puppy. Wind rustled in a pine tree as they stumbled down the sidewalk towards the parking lot, and the sound of the wind was like the taste of watermelon on a hot day, or maybe the feeling of a smooth pebble that had been polished at the bottom of a river for a couple of centuries. He was still working out what the feelings were like when they arrived at the car. Olivia led him around to the passenger side.

"Keys," she said. Her voice was chocolate mousse, or maybe chocolate pudding. The textural difference was subtle but important. He concentrated, trying to puzzle it out.

She stuck her hand in his pocket and he yelped. "Whoa!" She paid no attention, rummaging for his keys. Her hand brushed his hard dick in passing and he felt his face go hot but she paid no attention. Then the keys were jingling in her hand like coins made of ice or the color of sky between sunset and twilight (what?). Peter closed his eyes and the darkness was warm and funny.

Why This Must Be Read: seren_ccd's rec for a Chloe/Lex fic sent me tracking down this old favourite of mine. Set nominally after Smallville ends (it was written around season five, I think, and it goes AU after season six), it's a dark exploration of two fundamentally lonely, damaged people. The tension between these two is palpable; there is danger written all over their interaction. Chloe is more weary and worn-down than she ever was in the show, but there is something painfully authentic in the way she both shows and shadows her feelings. It's as far away from fluff as you can get, but it's beautiful and real.

Faster than she's ever been able to move, liquid in motion, and she's against the wall, wet cold seeping through her cheap coat, warm, too-solid body against hers. Lex's hand slides into the waist of her jeans, hand on the butt of the gun. Years of self-defense bring her knee up, fists ready, but he evades her a little too casually and steps back, palming her gun. He studies it with more interest than he's ever directed at her. "Pretty toy."

"Blow a hole in your ass if you ever touch me again." She's breathing too fast, heart trip-hammer in her throat, and she means it. Every word.
