Why This Must Be Read: Possibly my favorite long fic in a fandom that is full of great sprawling reads, but not a lot of het. Check, Please! is about a college men’s hockey team, and has only a handful of female characters. Who are all awesome, but it still makes for a pretty slanted fic landscape, so I’m extra grateful for these authors.

The premise is familiar: four friends go on a last road trip at the end of their time together in college. In the words of the summary, they encounter: “six thousand miles, two tents, several embarrassing photos, a giant rabbit, three cops, and a bear.” There is pining, tension, successful teamwork, total failures of teamwork, and friends supporting each other in the face of the world’s crappy gendered assumptions. Good times, right?

But in between the hijinks, this story does so many of the things that I look for in fanfiction. Puts characters in unfamiliar weird/silly/terrifying situations and shows them still very much themselves? Check. Takes issues that sort of lurk behind the action in canon, and drags them ruthlessly into the light for examination? Check.  Deals honestly with painful realities throughout but gives you the wish-fulfillment ending you feel guilty about wanting in your own life? Check, please.

Why This Must Be Read: This is another longish fic that pulls Lardo and Shitty out of their comfort zone - this time, into a swanky wedding with Shitty’s conservative, old-money, corporate-ladder-climbing family. Where they pretend to date, while playing chicken with their own feelings for one another. It has beautiful characterization for both of them, but especially Lardo, and some hilariously terrible original characters.

Mods, may I have tags for Fandom: Check Please and Ship: Lardo Duan/Shitty Knight, please?

Why This Must Be Read: What I wouldn’t give for this to be the show? Time has passed and things have settled down, but there’s still danger all over the place. This takes the show in a fantastic direction, adding a slightly supernatural angle to things. The writing is amazing and the characters are so true to the show. Slight warning, there is some main character death, but it takes place prior to the story starting.

Why This Must Be Read: Oh, if only this is the direction the show went during season four. It’s funny, tense, well-written, and just plain amazing. The characterization is spot on and the romance between Beth and Daryl feels so natural and wonderful. It’s a realistic slow-burn that pays off in such a great way.
