State of the Comm

Hello het reccers!

My fellow mod stars and I have been chatting behind the scenes about this community and what we can do to encourage het_reccers’ long term health as an active, vibrant place to share fic recs, and there are a couple things that we’d love everybody’s opinion and thoughts on.

Posting via Tumblr Submisisons or Dreamwidth

One thing we’ve been talking about is the idea of allowing rec posts via tumblr submissions. LJ is our current home and serves as a comprehensive repository of all our posted recs, but LJ is also a dying platform for fandom, with most people hanging out on Dreamwidth or tumblr these days.

Our question to you is: would you use tumblr submissions to post to het_reccers? We’re especially interested in the opinion of anybody who follows this comm on tumblr - would posting via tumblr make you more likely to contribute and share recs? Our ask box is open or you can respond directly to this post or reblog to share your thoughts.

(What we're thinking is that any recs shared via tumblr submissions would be cross-posted back to the LJ comm, perhaps posted as a special “hetreccers_on_tumblr” user account. This cross-posting would probably be manually done by the mods at first, but we could potentially automate it using something like ifttt.com, which is what powers our tumblr mirror.)

Alternately, if you're mostly on Dreamwidth these days - would you be interested in better cross-posting between the DW mirror and this community? We know that this was something that was not doable at the time the Dreamwidth mirror was created, but if it's something the community is interested in using, we could take a second look and see if there's potentially anything we can do now for better integration and to share posts between LJ and DW. What are your thoughts?

Community Participation (and Some Upcoming Events!)

And second, a more general question: is there anything we can do to encourage more participation? Are the monthly challenges still working? What would inspire you to write a manifesto? Are there any special events (discussions, challenges, something completely different?) that you think would be fun for the community to tackle? Any general thoughts, suggestions, or wacky brainstorming ideas you’d like to throw out?

If you’re a lurker on the comm, or somebody who posts infrequently or not at all—is there anything we could do that would make you feel more comfortable with posting or sharing recs?

Just to give you a quick peek at some of the stuff stars and I are planning, here’s what we are currently thinking of doing during the upcoming months:

  1. Promo posts for the community. We’d like to create a rebloggable post on tumblr and something cut/paste-able for DW/LJ to do some advertising for the comm.

  2. Friending meme. To get to know our fellow het reccers better! ♥

  3. October reccing challenge. October is the community’s anniversary month, and we'll be organizing a trope bingo reccing challenge—handing out bingo cards with different reccing categories, and challenging people to post 5 recs during the month that’ll give them a bingo. We're really excited about this idea, and hope you will be too!

  4. More discussion posts. We both enjoyed the Marvel discussion post this past month and hope to do more of the same in the future when the right topics/community events present themselves.

You can either respond to this post on LJ or tumblr, go to the tumblr ask box which we'll keep open until the end of the month, or message the mods directly if you feel more comfortable sharing your thoughts that way—stars (LJ/tumblr) or blithers (LJ/tumblr).

Marvel, 6 recs, Natasha/Bucky and various others

Not my first fandom or my first OTP by a long shot, but this pairing (and fandom) has definitely produced a lot of firsts for me personally, so…enjoy some recs!
