The Voice on the Other End of the Line-- A Jack Bauer/Chloe O'Brien 'Ship Manifesto

The Voice on the Other End of the Line

Fandom: 24
Pairing: Jack Bauer/Chloe O’Brien

Blurb:
24 is an serial action-drama television series starring Kiefer Sutherland as special agent Jack Bauer, who is a key member of CTU and is often portrayed as their most capable agent. Bauer's job usually involves helping prevent major terrorist attacks on the United States, saving both civilian lives and government administrations. On many occasions Jack does so at great personal expense, as those he thwarts subsequently target him and his loved ones. In the third season, Chloe O’Brien is introduced as a member of the CTU tech staff and she becomes Jack’s friend, ally and sometimes lifeline. The show is presented in the semblance of real time, with each season covering 24-hours in the life of Bauer. First broadcast on November 6, 2001, the show has run for 192 episodes over 8 seasons, with the series finale due to be broadcast on May 24, 2010.

Over the course of the series, Jack has been tortured, arrested, thought dead, a POW, exposed to bio-weapons and had most of his friends and loved ones die on him. For years his daughter was estranged from him, but that rift has been heeled. Through it all, his one constant friend and ally has been Chloe, whose own quirks and rather blunt personality tend to push people away. Still, the bond between these two is undeniable.

What’s so awesome about this ship is that the depth and strength of their friendship and professional relationship would translate into an epic ship! I mean, they started out antagonizing each other (he was in the throes of heroine addiction and she just was bad with people) and eventually she had to turn him in for his drug use, but that made him get help and when he was clean, he was grateful. Later, she helped him fake his death and was the only person he had contact with while in hiding for over a year…until he came out of hiding to save her life…and that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

10 recs (but be sure to look into the rest of these author’s works!)

Fic Rec #1: The Constant
Author: ChloeRulz
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3005385/1/The_Constant
Rating/Warning(s): M (Mature recovery situations and graphic sex)

Why This Must Be Read: This story is set Post Day 5 but is an AU: Weeks after being responsible for Jack Bauer's rescue from the Chinese, Chloe O'Brian finds herself made responsible for his recovery. What’s so great about this story is that it exemplifies the depth trust and affection in the J/C relationship.

Fic Rec #2: From The Beginning This Was My End
Author: ChloeRulz
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4132909/1/From_the_Beginning_This_Was_My_End
Rating/Warning(s): M (Warning for Sex/Violence)

Why This Must Be Read: The sequal to The Constant. It continues with the same strong portrayal of the characters. Summary: What begins as a simple political event spirals into a night of danger that threatens millions on the other side of the country

Fic Rec #3: Eternal Father, Strong to Save
Author: the crystalkey
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2835917/1/Eternal_Father_Strong_to_Save
Rating/Warning(s): T

Why This Must Be Read: This is a crossover between 24 and NCIS and is another example of their bond, but what‘s great is that it‘s seen by outsiders.

Fic Rec #4: Right for the Job
Author: day_dream_girl 1
Link: http://day-dream-girl1.livejournal.com/15407.html
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13

Why This Must Be Read: This is my favorite ‘How Chloe got hired at CTU’ fic.

Fic Rec #5: Eye of the Storm
Author: Agent O’Brian
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3953221/1/Eye_of_the_Storm
Rating/Warning(s): T

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of my favorite (of many) stories where Jack has to chose between Audrey, his once girlfriend on the show, and Chloe, his constant.

Fic Rec #6: No Contest
Author: Vaniah
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3376195/1/No_Contest
Rating/Warning(s): K

Why This Must Be Read: This story is from the POV of Milo, another CTU worker, who dated Chloe at one point. He and Morris, Chloe’s ex-husband, had some tension… but neither of them stood a chance next to Jack.

Fic Rec #7: They Say You’re Pretty But
Author: Natushka-86
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3364227/1/They_Say_Youre_Pretty_But
Rating/Warning(s): T

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the many fics set while Jack was in hiding and most people thought he was dead. Only Chloe and 3 others know the truth.

Fic Rec #8: 8 things about the girl in question
Author: rorylie
Link: http://community.livejournal.com/chlack/28431.html
Rating/Warning(s): R

Why This Must Be Read: This one is light and fun and celebrates the little quirks that Chloe has and hoe Jack learns about them. It’s great cause really, haven’t we all been there?

Fic Rec #9: Penis Embargo
Author: scoob2222
Link: http://scoob2222.livejournal.com/51197.html
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17

Why This Must Be Read: Smutty and fun, this fic is definitely a must read….as long as you’re over 18!

Fic Rec #10: (A two-for-one, cause they’re my fics) After the EMP & Season 6 with a twist
Author: kaitlia777 (SageK on ff.net)
Link: http://kaitlia777.livejournal.com/31577.html#cutid1 & http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5682197/1/Season_6With_a_Twist
Rating/Warning(s): R (for violence) & R (for language and recall of torture)

Why This Must Be Read: After the EMP is set in Season 8 and puts a Chlack spin on the happenings of that season and Season 6 With a Twist is a long, detailed WIP that has gotten positive feedback for it’s realistic portrayal of the depth of the J/C relationship without veering too far from the realistic aspects of Jack‘s fragile post torture psyche.
