A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), 7 Recs – Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister

I have to include this ship since I have more fics bookmarked for them than any other. These will tend to be book series based over TV series based but a fan of either format should be fine with them.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a pretty sweet little piece to start us off. It’s not devoid of the grittiness of George R. R. Martin’s world but it’s about as fluffy a piece as you can get without going the AU route. Brienne and Jaime’s interaction is full of the tension and affection they can exhibit with each other. Jaime is a bit of a pest because he delights in being so but he is aware of Brienne’s inner fragility and doesn’t overstep himself (just comes awfully close). If you want a believable look at how these two could possibly transition from friends to something more, here’s a good one.

Special Rec: 11 of ?

Why This Must Be Read: The interactions between Jaime and Brienne are so believable here, as is their respect for each other. This sets them in a space program where Brienne is supporting Jaime’s mission from Control. This setup gives a realistic AU reason for their rapid trust and dependence on each other. The banter and affection here are adorable and the ending is squee-worthy.

Rating/Warning(s): General Audiences/Roose Bolton is his own warning

Genre: Humor/Fluff/AU

Special Rec: 12 of ?

Why This Must Be Read: This is just a flat out funny read. I know, Roose Bolton and humor do not go together but CommaSplice and a modern setting make for a lot of laughs. There’s romance too but it’s more watching these two navigate the situation and snark at each other that makes this little fic so enjoyable.

Title: Spoken to Skin

Author: SandwichesYumYum

Link: AO3

Rating/Warning(s): Mature/descriptions of serious injuries, intimations of upcoming death, mentions of hanged bodies, sexual implications, swearing, spoilers for the ending of “A Dance with Dragons”

Genre: Drama/Angst

Word Count/WIP?: 4,600; complete

Special Rec: 13 of ?

Why This Must Be Read: Set directly after we last see Jaime and Brienne in “A Dance with Dragons,” I doubt George will write a scene this heart achingly perfect for these two battered warriors. This piece is so real, so believable, so beautiful, so grounded and sad and yet ever so slightly hopeful. It’s a romantic interlude that you can totally believe in and yet it isn’t truly romantic, but then again maybe it is. It’s all about the exquisite care and affection and trust and respect and honor these two lavish on each other.

Title: Nice and Proper

Author: Desi (desi_dangerous)

Link: AO3

Rating/Warning(s): General Audiences/Bronn’s salty humor, references to sex workers, quick reference to that whole twincest mess our hero has going on

Genre: Humor

Word Count/WIP?: 1,684; complete

Recced on LiveJournal By: roofshadow

Special Rec: 14 of ?

Why This Must Be Read: This is a little what-if ficlet set right after Jaime and Brienne part ways in episode 4x04. Bronn has his say about the tension-laden parting and Jaime has some rethinking to do. It’s a fun and humorous read because Bronn does have a way with words and it has delightful hints of the reluctant love story unfolding between Jaime and Brienne.

Why This Must Be Read: Jaime is a silent Western movie star and Brienne is a stagehand. This story was written for the following prompt: I saw this and immediately had a hankering for a fic where one of our pair (and I know which one I'd prefer, tbh, lol!) is tied to some train tracks by a doer of theatrical evil who has a moustache of dark twizzlement, and has to be rescued by the other. *Plays the plinky-plonky piano of silent movie peril* There could also be murderderation and such. I'm not fussed about that. Ta muchly. If that description doesn’t pique your interest, I guess we have very dissimilar taste. ^_^ There is some romance here of course and some requisite trust building and the requested Brienne being awesome and it’s just a very fun read all in all. (Plus, there’s lots of 1920s slang!)

Title: Works and Days

Author: Mussimm

Link: AO3

Rating/Warning(s): Teen And Up Audiences (until the last work which is Explicit)/spoilers for the end of season six, implied/referenced non-con, war (and all that goes along with it), swearing, imprisonment, graphic sexual scenes in part seven, reference to that whole twincest mess our hero has/had going on

Genre: Drama/Post-canon ficlet series

Word Count/WIP?: 25,396; complete

Recced on LiveJournal By: roofshadow

Special Rec: 16 of ?

Why This Must Be Read: This series is made of short glimpses into the minds of Jaime and Brienne and it brilliantly illuminates the nature of their relationship and the way it shapes their perceptions and their world. There is a plotline in the background but it is primarily about who these two people are and how they affect each other. Get ready for some truly poetic turns of phrase and some moments that pierce your heart. If you would prefer to avoid the “porn time” in the final work The Sorrows That Women Cause, rest assured that the final chapter of the penultimate work Overcome By Sleep is a fitting ending that will have you weeping and/or whooping for joy.
