Why This Must Be Read: God, I love this fic. It's beautifully written and the plot if fabulous. It's sad and angsty and full of drama but has a happy ending, so, YAY! The character development between Rodney and Ronan, while an odd combination, totally works in this fic and the relationship between John and Elizabeth is slow and graceful and totally believable. The added bonus of an angsty Sam Carter with a secret is nice and well handled as well. I cannot say enough good things about this fic so go, read it now!!
“I will never think less of you,” the emotion made her voice barely recognizable. “No matter what happens, no matter what they do to you… I won’t leave you,” she whispered. “To me… all that matters isn’t who you should or shouldn’t be,… but who you are.”
He took a shuddering breath and looked at her, the unasked question piercing her heart.
“I won’t leave you here, John; I swear,” she said. “I swear”. The vow, she thought. A promise. They looked at each other, a long burning gaze. The tears still flowed down her cheeks and she thought of blood that stained his clothes, blood that she felt upon her own hands. It sank into her skin and now it was part of her.
His pain was like her own.
She tightened her grip on his hand shaking her head at the doubt in his eyes. She will hold on, she won’t give up.
“All I could think about were oranges… I didn’t feel it… it didn’t hurt… like it never happened, but I know it did. All I could see were oranges… in your hands.”
He close his eyes, but she saw the embarrassment in them. She reached with her other hand for his face and wiped wet remains of his tears.
That was the moment when she made her vow, as strong as any spoken marriage vow could be; and by the strange sense of things she was sure he knew.
