Multi(Period Drama)fandom, 5 Recs, Various Pairings
Fandom: Les Misérables
Pairing: Éponine Thénardier/Enjolras
Title: Of Sand and Distant Shores
Author: Khismer
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13, AU
Word Count/WIP?: 48080, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 18/31

Why This Must Be Read: I guess I wasn’t the only one to walk out of the cinema going a) poor Èponine and b) man, Aaron Tveit is fine! Of Sand and Distant Shores is a reimagination and continuation of Les Misérables with pirates, high seas, thwarted love – and Èponine, finally, turning into the heroine she always wanted to be, but did not have the courage to be before. 35 chapters is a bit of an investment, but it is worth it.

Éponine was displeased enough to be escorting Marius’ future bride on the voyage. Capture, even by such an odd crew as this, pushes her firmly into the category of outright incensed. Safe though they may be, she is caught, and Éponine doesn’t much like keeping.

Fandom: Les Misérables
Pairing: Éponine Thénardier/Enjolras
Title: At Dusk Through Narrow Streets
Author: unicornesque
Link: fanfiction.net
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Word Count/WIP?: 15650, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 19/31

Why This Must Be Read: Unlike the previous rec for this pairing, there's nothing AU about this (so; sadness abounds), but it is so beautifully written, a tragic ending only enhances it. Unicornesque uses classical literature as a promt for each of the seven chapters and the way she weaves those storylines together is masterful. Éponine as water and Enjolras as fire; the sense of dissolving into smoke and fog as the revolution rages on; the bitterness of love lost - At Dusk Through Narrow Street is a personal favourite of mine across fandoms.

There is a prince in a street rat's bedroom, but Éponine is too old now for fairytales.

She sinks into the mattress, as far away from him as the small space will allow, stealing a glance at his profile. The women of Paris like to giggle about his angel's face, but in this murky sea of gold and shadow his feature are thrown into odd relief, too harsh to be pretty.

Fandom: Little Women
Pairing: Josephine March/Theodore Laurence
Title: a cold hard season
Author: arbitrarily
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): PG
Word Count/WIP?: 1592, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 20/31

Why This Must Be Read: Everything arbitrarily writes is poignant, painful, profound, and this fic is no different. Tinged with sadness and regret, it is Jo and her boy Teddy; older, wiser, harder - and my absolute favourite fic in this fandom.

Time and change itself share the distinct similarity in that one is apt not to notice their passage.

Winter passes on to spring; leaves shade first from a newborn, tentative yellow to a verdant, ripe green that envelopes all of Concord. From there, they wilt and crinkle in browns and reds along the foot-worn trails and front stoops of houses. The cold will beckon and the snow will fall, and once the drifts begin to melt the cycle will begin anew – yellows to greens to reds.

What happens is this: they get a little older, they burn a little colder.
The empty space for regrets widens that much more; Jo fights against the temptation to stare too long into that yawning gap.

Fandom: Little Women
Pairing: Josephine March/Theodore Laurence, Amy March/Theodore Laurence
Title: Scarlet and Ivory
Author: mariagonerlj
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Mature
Word Count/WIP?: 2765, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 21/31

Why This Must Be Read: I love it when writers expand on worlds, bring something new into an already established setting. Scarlet and Ivory is a horror story set in the world of Little Women, and it works perfectly because mariagonerlj is such a giftet writer.

When Laurie comes back from Europe, he brings with him strange dreams.

He is pale when he comes from the continent, first of all. Pale beyond anything. Within the black suits that he wears for Beth's mourning, pearl gleams between his glove and sleeve, and his fingers are as white as snow when he lays them down on the piano to play for them all gently.

His face reminds Jo of old, old stories now, stories dredged from memories won when fast asleep. Stories of boys and girls carved out of glass, with jewels for eyes and blood-red smiles, frosted over entirely.

Sometimes it feels as though he can look at her even when Jo knows he isn't there; even when Jo knows that he's already left her house entirely.

And sometimes Jo thinks, deep in the night, that Laurie never truly leaves.

Fandom: Victoria (TV-series)
Pairing: Queen Victoria/William Lamb 2nd Viscount Melbourne
Title: speak low, if you speak
Author: percybysshes (ascanios)
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Mature
Word Count/WIP?: 2471, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 22/31

Why This Must Be Read: A late addition to my recs, this Juletide fic is the perfect balm to any heart broken after the tv-series chose to follow history (those bastards!), instead of giving us more smouldering interactions between Victoria and her Lord M.

When historians write the stories of Victoria Regina this will not be one of them, none of this will. Victoria does not follow Elizabeth’s example.

But Reader, imagine for a moment that she does
.

Mods, could I have tags for the following: ship: Éponine Thénardier/Enjolras, fandom: Victoria (TV-series), ship: Queen Victoria/William Lamb 2nd Viscount Melbourne

Dear hardworking Mods

There's somthing weird going on with the tags for these fandoms. The tag for LM should be fandom: Les Misérables, and for Little Women, it ought to be ship: Josephine March/Theodore Laurence and Amy March/Theodore Laurence - at least if we go for consistency ;)

Also, I'll edit my post after January 1th, when the authors of Juletide 2016 have been revealed.

Re: Tags
Thanks for flagging—correcting existing tags takes a little while, but we'll add it to the to-do list :)

Re: Tags
If you guys ever need someone to go through all of the tags and flag the ones that are faulty, you just let me know; I enjoy that sort of thing (systemating and putting things in the correct boxes. I'm a weird child).
