Why This Must Be Read: Leia's deep self-awareness and her conscious experience of her own grief are the real selling points of this story, which follows her on a mission-gone-wrong after the events of Episode VII. This is an older, wiser character who knows exactly who she is and what she means to people—and just how to deploy the power she wields. My heart ached for her by the end of this, of course, but the story is such a satisfying merger of sequel and character study that I had to rec it.
