Why This Must Be Read:  This is one of my favourite works in any fandom. I’m usually pro-fake-married trope, but in this case in particular it works brilliantly. @wah-pah does a fantastic job of setting up a plot, that’s well constructed and mysterious (it’s a proper murder mystery, by the way, hence the lenght), and for which the fake marriedness still makes perfect organic sense. More than that, the level of detail is cinematic: the descriptions of places, wardrobe, even food are so on point, it’s easy to put yourself in the time and space that the characters inhabit. And of course, Phryne and Jack are still Phryne and Jack, and all the usual innuendo, banter and patholical inability to communicate. The (spot-on) supreme awkwardness they display when trying to form full, coherent sentences regarding how they feel about each other. Watching them is an absolute treat and … Ire ally can’t say enough good things about this one.

Why This Must Be Read: Oh, another beloved trope of mine: Easy Amnesia. It always fun to see a character trying to reconcile what they remember with the reality of who they are. In this case, dear, old Jack trying to bluffing his way through a bout of trauma-induced amnesia is both funny and a little heartbreaking (given his WWI war-vet status), but the cherry on top of the cake is the way the situation kind of reintroduces him to his relationship with Phryne, and allows him to make new observations/decisions about her without past perceptions weighing down.

Why This Must Be Read: For people who watch the show, Unnatural Habits was the episode that launched a thousand post-ep fics. Too much left unsaid. Too much said between the lines. This one, the first part in the Placetne series,  probably my favourite of the “classic” post-ep crop. It’s all Phryne’s POV and it beautifully captures  both her voice, and what makes her relationship with Jack such a vibrant fascinating dynamic.  Also, the prose is amazing (yes, including the sex part).

Why This Must Be Read: There’s poetry in it. Better, there’s poetry recited by none other than Jack “sexy voice” Robinson. Putting that image sound in your head should be reason enough to read this little one-shot. As a bonus, it also happens to be rich, sensuous and extremely funny. Can’t really get into why, without spoiling it, but I can say this fic does great job of balancing the sexual tension between Phryne and Jack, with the almostcorrosive adorableness of some of their interactions -much like the show does, when at its best.

Why This Must Be Read: This one is kind of a two-for-one. There is definitely Phryne/Jack at the core but that relationship isah…uhm…shall we say implied? Let’s go with implied. So we get a peek into that relationship through the hilarious reactions that Dot and Hugh have to their shenanigans. Needless to say the entire thing is a delightful laugh riot in which the sweetness of Dot and the innocence of Hugh brilliantly contrast the more er… earthy concerns of Phryne and Jack.
