Marvel, 6 recs, Natasha Romanoff/Bucky Barnes

Admittedly, none of these fics are truly epic in length. But what better way to settle in for a cold night than with a pair whose love story spans almost 60 years...and whose ship name is "Winter Widow"?

Why This Must Be Read: Even in the movieverse, where they don't (yet) have any established history, Bucky and Natasha are still a wonderful and wonderfully compatible pair, and this fic gets at exactly the ways they click and connect. There's also georgraphically accurate D.C. details (oh, Madam's Organ on a weekend), a great little mission segue, and some very satisfying resolution. Yum.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a pretty classic sort of fic for this ship—one that doesn't hold back the angst of the pair's past and future while letting them revel in the little moments they get to have (or not) together. Bucky is as messy and sentimental as ever, and it's perfect.

Why This Must Be Read: Too hot! Hot damn! No, but really, this story has barely any dialogue—it's really just porn without a plot. But it's good porn, made better by the little touches throughout that get at the established relationship and how well these two understand each other.

Why This Must Be Read: A rare case of the second-person POV working really well, this story follows Natasha through her life in Russia and eventually to S.H.I.E.L.D. The Winter Soldier is a key part of her life without defining her, and that's pretty much just the right balance for these characters.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is anything but fluffy, but it does a neat job with its no-powers AU premise in terms of shifting the characters an their trauma into a basic modern setting. There's a good dose of Steve, and Natasha's role is memorable and ambiguous in all the right ways.

Why This Must Be Read: Smart and creepy, this is another story that follows the arc of Natasha's life, from her Soviet training in Russia through her defection to S.H.I.E.L.D., but with some twists and turns you won't see coming. The shippiness is present throughout, but tinged with the wrongness of what both characters have been made into—and it's so satisfying.
