The X-Files, 5 recs, various pairings
On the off chance that there are other people on this comm who enjoy pairings *other* than Mulder/Scully on The X-Files, I thought I'd throw out a few of my favorite unconventional pairing fics. :-) For the die-hard MSR fans, though? I'd *still* say give these a try. Some of them don't even involve Mulder or Scully at all, and those that do are *very* respectful of the MSR 'ship.

Fandom Category: The X-Files
Pairing: Krycek/Marita, a little implied past Mulder/Krycek
Fic Title: Not My Lover
Author: Deslea
Link: Part 1/7 (links to the next chapter at the bottom of each page)
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17: sexuality, language, violence
Genre: romance, angst, mytharc
WIP?: not by a long shot *g*

Why This Must Be Read: If it's okay, I'll just copy and paste my crack_van rec of the story here, because it still applies:

You can't wander far off the beaten path (MSR) in X-Files fandom without stumbling over Deslea. She first made her mark in the Skinner/Scully genre, but made it indellible when she ventured into mytharc-centric fic in which Mulder and Scully are peripheral characters at best. She almost single-handedly invented the Krycek/Marita pairing as a serious subgenre of XF fic, and she has a grasp of the mytharc with its myriad complexities that Chris Carter could only *wish* he had. ;-)

Not My Lover is one of the best examples of Deslea's work. It tells the story of the mytharc from Alex and Marita's POV from the end of the second season up through the end of the seventh. It's hard to explain why Deslea's Krycek-as-hero works when so many others' don't, but I think it's because she doesn't ignore or downplay the dark side of the character, but also doesn't play it up to a point where you can't sympathize with him at all. Her Krycek--and Marita too--are both pragmatic and Machiavellian: they have a goal, to prevent colonization, and they'll do whatever has to be done, sacrifice whatever has to be sacrificed, to achieve that greater good. But you sympathize with the very human way they are each other's buffer against that necessity. Basically it's a story of love, loss, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption for two people caught not between light and dark but between varying shades of gray.

Fandom Category: The X-Files
Pairing: Doggett/Scully, implied Mulder/Scully
Fic Title: The Last Worthless Evening
Author: Anne Hedonia
Link: The Last Worthless Evening
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17 for sexuality
Genre: romance, angst
WIP?: no

Why This Must Be Read: This is not the best DSR story ever, or even the best DSR story by Anne Hedonia, but what it *is*? Is the story that gave this 'ship street cred and set the bar for everything that came after it. There were other DSR stories before it, but IMO this was the first to really deal head on with the inherent complexities of putting Scully in a relationship with someone other than Mulder, and Doggett in particular. Which is why to this it day remains one of my favorites. It's about the moment when grieving gives way to something else, and to say much more than that would spoil it. So I'll just conclude with if you have *any* Doggett/Scully leanings at all, or even if you don't but are okay with Scully moving on *if* Mulder is gone, then this is definitely a must-read.

Fandom Category: The X-Files
Pairing: Doggett/Marita
Fic Title: Shadow Wife
Author: Rachel Anton
Link: Shadow Wife (There's also a sequel, Trouble Me With You)
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17 for sex
Genre: romance, mytharc, dash of angst
WIP?: no

Why This Must Be Read: Because Rachel took a pairing that, as far as I know of, no one else ever even thought of, and made it work. Shouldn't that be answer enough? *g*

Fandom Category: The X-Files
Pairing: Mulder/Reyes, implied Mulder/Scully
Fic Title: Left Standing
Author: Maidenjedi
Link: Left Standing
Rating/Warning(s): R for violence, sexuality. Implied character deaths.
Genre: apocafic, angst, romance (sort of)
WIP?: no

Why This Must Be Read: I'm probably the only person on Earth who had this reaction, but when Mulder and Reyes met for the first time in "Empedocles" (I think I remembered the ep title right? been a while...), I went, "Dang, why didn't they meet each other first?" Meaning before Scully and Doggett respectively. *g* I thought the characters instantly clicked, but nonetheless it was very difficult to find fanfic that made the pairing believable. Until this story came along. The circumstances under which Mulder and Monica come together are not pleasant, and I wouldn't even call their relationship a romance in any real sense of the word, but it's a scenario that is utterly, grimly believable in the XF universe, executed by one of the best unconventional 'ship writers in the fandom.

Fandom Category: The X-Files
Pairing: Skinner/Reyes UST
Fic Title: To Absent Friends
Author: Lara Means
Link: To Absent Friends
Rating/Warning(s): PG; no warnings necessary, I don't think
Genre: angst, UST
WIP?: no

Why This Must Be Read: Okay, so yes, I 'ship Monica Reyes with just about everybody *but* Doggett. ;-) In my defense, the D/R 'ship always felt like a cheap copy of the MSR to me and I thought the characters deserved better. So I've always loved this USTy little bonding piece between Monica and Skinner. It's set after "This is Not Happening," with Skinner grieving for a lost friend and Reyes providing what comfort she can. Short, but sweet.

This doesn't cover all the non-MSR pairings out there by a long shot, or even all the fanfic out there for these (well, except possibly in one or two cases... *g*) but they are my favorite stories for some of my favorite pairings. :-) Hope those of you who decide to give them a chance enjoy them as much as I do.

If you ever need more recs for them, just give me a holler. :-) Or do a search for Anne Hedonia on Gossamer and that'll cover at least 50% or more of the good stuff. *grin*

Oh! These look lovely!

For the purposes of tagging, I'm gonna need to know the full ship for "Shadow Wife."

Ah, okay. I'll go ahead and edit it but I'll tell you here too: it's Doggett/Marita.

I'm not even sure the author's writing fic anymore, so I guess she can't really object. ;-)

Wow. That is indeed an interesting pairing. ;)

Unfortunately LJ is being wonky right now, so I'll tag this post tomorrow.

Looking forward to reading some of these recs!

Jeez, wow. That's a very nice rec to read. Thanks, woman!

Also you couldn't be more right about "Shadow Wife" and "Trouble Me With You." I've been looking up Rachel Anton's old stuff recently (I started with "Cherry Ripe," though, the hottest Scully/Krycek fic that's ever been done) and ended up re-reading those. Damn I'd like to know more about that woman and what she's writing, fic or not, these days.

Again, flabbergasted thanks! :)

Hi, sorry if I'm butting in, but I was recently pointed to this comm after discovering Deslea and Alex/Marita. I was wondering if there are any more stories in the XF:VCU AU other than those on her website, which has been downscaled due to hacker attacks?

And also: are there any other Alex/Marita fics of this quality? I'd appreciate any good recs.

Thanks in advance!

I'm afraid I can't answer your question about the VCU stories because I wasn't really involved with that, but yes there is a LOT of good Alex/Marita fanfic out there, though it can be hard to find simply by virtue of *not* being MSR. :-) Most of the authors are on Gossamer, which I *think* can be searched by pairing, and if you want specific recs a great place to ask is the haremxf community. (Otherwise known as the Harem of X-Files Other Women Defenders: it was for writing/promoting/distributing fanworks and meta based on the ladies *other* than Scully--not because any of us didn't love Scully but because she didn't need the help. *g*) The community's not nearly as active as it used to be, but the folks there are friendly and as far as I know a request for recs still gets a pretty good response. :-)

Sadly, the "Fiction Archive" links on the side are all broken since they did link back to Deslea's site. :-\

Umm...other than that, I wrote a couple of K/M fics myself back in the day. I wouldn't call them masterpieces of the pairing, but I don't think I did too terribly either. :-) Either way, if you're interested, you can find them here: http://azar.ink-and-quill.com/ficxf.php

Hope that helps a little! :-D

It does, thank you for pointing me to another comm I can check. Maybe some of them will know if there were other stories in the VCU universe. And thanks, I will definitely check yours as well.

I haven't seen X-Files in years, but it took stumbling across some fics to make me want to read fic in that fandom again. I don't think I had seen any Alex/Marita before, and I was intrigued by it.
valihavaliha on February 23rd, 2010 01:27 am (UTC)
Um... I must admit I'm a bit confused by the haremxf comm. It lacks all the things I've come to rely on in an LJ comm, especially tags. How can you find what you're looking for without tags? Or at least memories. User info can only be accessed by adding "profile" to the url since there aren't any LJ links I could see. It looks like LJ entries embedded into a website. Most of the entries seem to be about the Fox and Rat virtual seasons.

And oh how I wish I could find the fics listed in the Archive section! I went to it using the Wayback machine, and some of the descriptions sound great. Unfortunately, the fics themselves haven't been crawled. Could they be archived somewhere else?

Oh dear. I didn't mean for this to sound critical or anything, I know first hand how much work it is to run a comm and a website, and was sorry to find out that Deslea had scaled back the website due to hacker attacks (seriously, what kind of hacker targets fanfic sites?). I've just realized how much I rely to the tools LJ provides. I'm sure I'll be able to manage, and will ask for recs, if that's allowed on the com.

You probably aren't even still looking but...
The community is in disarray, with a mostly absentee mod/maintainer. I think just a handful of the original members are still in XF fandom. The Fox and Rat posts are mostly inappropriate, even spammy. If I were the mod, I'd delete them, frankly.

The archive is a huge loss. Did you try searching at Gossamer or any of the specialty archives?

Here are some of Deslea's stories at Rattales: http://www.squidge.org/ratales/authord.html

If you have a story title, you can ask here: The X-Files Lost and Found Community or here on lj, try xfstoryfinders. There are people who have saved everything to their hard drive.

bardsmaid has written some Marita/Krycek and has a website: http://www.bardsmaid.org/. I think there might even be an archive for the pairing. If you are interested, I'll keep looking.

Re: You probably aren't even still looking but...
Oh yes, I keep an eye out, and I've found some good stories in the mean time, and have read everything bardsmaid wrote and left feedback for her since I really enjoyed her work. I think I asked for some fics at xfstoryfinders but that was months ago. I'm afraid work and school have eaten my life, and I haven't done anything in my main fandom for a long time.

So yes, if you have some recs to share, please feel free to do so. And thank you for pointing me to the Lost and Found site, I don't remember seeing it before.

Re: You probably aren't even still looking but...
I can't exactly recommend them, since I haven't read them. However, Kelly Keil's name came up at Bright Shiny Objects, a rec site I trust. They liked "Leaving Shangri-la," but she's written several others with that pairing. I can't link to stories at Gossamer, but here is her page: http://fluky.gossamer.org/author/10213-1.html

I count four Marita/Krycek stories. I'll keep my eye out for you. And do give the L&F Board a try if you have story titles but no working link.

Re: You probably aren't even still looking but...
Thanks, I will! I'll have to go back to haremxf to see if I can find the titles of the stories, and then I'll go search for them.

Re: You probably aren't even still looking but...
I found a link waybacked to her 2001 version website, Blondie's Rat Cave (!). http://web.archive.org/web/20020208105802/www.fredfarm.com/~deslea/ratcave/newframe.html

I didn't check all the individual links but at least that gives you a start.

The old url was ratcave dot deslea dot com/. If you want to plug it into Internet Archive to try to find later versions. The 2008 link has a trojan. Don't click it.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but A Night In Tunisia is really hot.

If you find enough great stories, you should post them here at the next shipper's manifesto.

Re: You probably aren't even still looking but...
I managed to find most of Deslea's stories, at Literatti, so I spent quite some time saving them all (a habit I picked up when the only net access I had were expensive net cafes), and I'll do the same for anything I find at the link you provided for me. Thank you! I'm fine with a whole range of stories, and if I find something I like, I'll definitely share it.
