9 Recs (8 Fandoms)
Fandom: The Book Thief
Pairing: Liesel Meminger/Max Vandenburg
Title: But You Built Me Dreams Instead
Author: olivja
Link: @ AO3
Rating: Mature
Warning(s): PTSD, references to death, as well as nazism, as one might expect from the canon.
Word Count/WIP: 13,348 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 13/20

Why This Must Be Read: This begins where The Book Thief ends and follows Liesel and Max through the following five years. Like the canon, it strikes a balance between the grimness of the setting and little joys. The evolution of Liesel and Max's relationship feels sincere and earned.

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Ginny Weasley/Neville Longbottom
Title: Be Smarter Not Braver
Author: victoriousscarf
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Mature/Underage sex
Word Count/WIP: 6,777 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 14/20

Why This Must Be Read: Set during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this looks at Ginny and Neville as responsibility for Dumbledore's Army falls on their (and Luna's) shoulders. I love this because it gives us a glimpse of Neville and Ginny that canon wasn't able to deliver: reshaped and hardened by their own experiences in the war, separate from Harry, Hermione, and Ron's. I also love the relationship that develops between Ginny and Neville—at times, it's brutal in its honesty, but it's genuine and has depth.

Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Steve Rogers
Title: All the Dead Lie Down
Author: Imogen_Penn
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Mature/Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Word Count/WIP: 46,195 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 15/20

Why This Must Be Read: Okay, I'll confess: I'm one of those people who reads most Darcy-ships. But I keep coming back to Darcy/Steve over and over, and this is one of my favorites to re-read. It's set in the fallout from a zombie apocalypse, when Darcy's little band of survivors collides with Steve; and the way that Imogen_Penn delivers on their relationship is fantastic, because they become a great team. You don't get much well-written fic where Darcy is a believable—and integral—part of the action, but you get that here. Also, it has a sequel, so that's always a bonus.

Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Pairing: Wanda Maximoff/Vision
Title: A Study in Humanity
Author: panpipe
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): General/no warnings
Word Count/WIP: 4,804 (Complete)Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 16/20

Why This Must Be Read: If nothing else, read it for lines like this: No, she joined the Avengers because the entire world was a war, and she a fighter. "A Study in Humanity" is a different take on Wanda/Vision than my previous rec but no less enjoyable. The author does a great job of balancing Vision's inexperience with his wisdom, and beneath Wanda's agony, she's still a young woman capable of empathy.

Fandom: The Raven Cycle
Pairing: Blue Sargent/Richard Gansey III
Title: We're A Crooked Love in a Straight Line Down
Author: dicksargents (BlondeTate)
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Teen/No warnings
Word Count/WIP: 3,824 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 17/20

Why This Must Be Read: Because it's Valentine's Day fluff... and sometimes we all need a little Valentine's Day fluff, right?

No, but in all sincerity, Blue is so wonderfully, absolutely Blue in this, and she's exactly as you'd expect her to be with Valentine's Day; and Gansey, of course, is endearing in his own way. And still, it pulls at some of the threads of what's happening in canon, just enough to make your heart hurt a little. Just a really lovely little piece.

Fandom: Revenge
Pairing: Emily Thorne/Nolan Ross
Title: Accept No Substitutes
Author: stellatundra
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): General/no warnings
Word Count/WIP: 2,975 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 18/20

Why This Must Be Read: "Accept No Substitutes" is a Pacific Rim crossover, which means that it delivers on that drift compatibility fic every true OTP needs. It also happens to deliver on great characterization, and stellatundra blends the world of the revenge and Graysons with Jaegers and Kaijus well.

***

Fandom: Star Wars
Pairing: Rey/Poe Dameron
Title: Reckless Abandon
Author: q_urious
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Teen/No warnings
Word Count/WIP: 2,347 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 19/20

Why This Must Be Read: Filling the gap between learning Luke's location and Rey leaving, this gives us some great moments between Rey and Poe as they bicker over such things as BB-8, who's the better pilot, and hair-brained choices in battle—all while grudgingly coming to respect and care for each other.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard
Title: Before and After
Author: rushingwind
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Teen/no warnings
Word Count/WIP: 11,971 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 20/20

Why This Must Be Read: First, it's a fix-it fic, and I think those of who love this relationship can agree there'll never be enough of those; second, it's a fix-it fic with TIME TRAVEL. If that doesn't sell you on it, it also features: John feeling ALL THE THINGS, and Elizabeth being wonderful, and of course, bewildered teammates. In all seriousness, it's a great read, and it's an inventive mending of the disaster that was the end of Elizabeth Weir's story.

Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: Vala Mal Doran/Jonas Quinn
Title: My Eyes on the Lights, Her Hand on My Shoulder
Author: NeoVenus22
Link: @ AO3
Rating/Warning(s): General/no warnings
Word Count/WIP: 5,345 (Complete)
Recced on LiveJournal by: galfridian
Special Rec: 21/20

Why This Must Be Read: Because Vala is delightful, and because NeoVenus22 writes her so well, and because it explores what it's like for Jonas and Vala as "outsiders"—to be neither Tau'ri nor one of the original SG-1. And of course, Vala flirts with Jonas, and of course, Jonas goes with it. It's an enjoyable read, especially if you're fond of both characters, and it makes me wish there were much, much more Jonas/Vala fic.

Note to mods: I added a couple of Battlestar Galactica tags that don't belong, but I can't seem to get rid of them now. (I originally planned a rec and then found it'd already been recced here.)

Tags needed for:

fandom: the book thief
ship: liesel meminger/max vandenburg
fandom: the raven cycle
ship: blue sargent/richard gansey iii
ship: vala mal doran/jonas quinn

Also, I noticed that the tag for Emily/Nolan has her last name spelled "Thorn" but it's "Thorne."

Tags added/removed as necessary (I also added one for Rey/Poe, which seemed to be missing). We'll see about correcting Emily Thorn(e)! Thanks.
