Why This Must Be Read: Because it's a sweet, funny little ghost au ficlet that manages to keep the characters IC, which can be a hard feat with such an AU.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is a fantastic twist/subversion of the sex pollen trope, with Stiles’s dad and Scott’s mom as the affected parties. It’s wonderfully and smartly adult, and showcases exactly why I like the two of them together so much, along with a hefty dose of ensemble goodness (and perfect character voices) during a cross-country road trip.

"Okay," Melissa says. "Great. So this sex magic follows rules."

"Not just this sex magic, any magic," Lydia says, impatiently. "It's like science. Just because people in the Middle Ages hadn't discovered the scientific method didn't meant the rules didn't work."

"Right, okay," Melissa says. This is her life: being lectured about magic by a intimidatingly-brilliant teenager.

Why This Must Be Read: So. Stuff went down in the mid-season 5 finale that was pretty dramatic. This is a great little episode tag that shocked me by how right in tone it is. It's Daryl-pov, so there's a distance and a dismissiveness to the prose that hits exactly right for someone who's grieving and having to deal with the fallout of some pretty terrible stuff. Basically, this is a perfect, painful little tag that surprised me with how on point it was.

Why This Must Be Read: It's fun seeing the characters from both shows interacting, there's great group dynamics at work here - love the humor throughout the fic, and Kenzi's snark is perfectly on point. I enjoyed seeing her tease Derek and work her way past his walls; I think he deserves nice things after the trainwreck that's been his life, and this is a lovely read to that end.

(mods: there's no ship tag for this couple - fyi, Kenzi has no last name in canon, afaik)

Why This Must Be Read: If you've read any of Kyrie Anne's work before, you know you're in for a treat whenever she posts something new, and this story is no exception. A lot of it has been jossed since publication, but no matter—this piece is a lyrical, heartfelt exploration, rich with humor and pathos and incredible characterization. Enjoy.

In addition to regular reccing, this community has an ongoing Manifesto Challenge. If you have a ship, character, or fandom that you want to share with the world, tell us what and why and throw some recs our way!

You don't need special permission to post a manifesto—just make sure you tag it with "special: manifesto" in addition to the usual tags and check the Master Manifesto List to make sure you're not duplicating something that's already been posted. (It's okay to offer your own take on a ship, character, or fandom already on the list—but please try to avoid reiterating someone else’s points!)

Manifesto Template
Because we're asking you to rec, at minimum, 10 fics, we've truncated the rec template to make it easier to fill out—just cut and paste the HTML for easy use!

Also, feel free to rec more than 10 stories! MORE THAN TEN IS WONDERFUL! And if you're doing a character or fandom manifesto, feel free to include multiple pairings.

15 December 2014 @ 02:32 pm
Herein is the complete list of all Manifestos (ships, characters, and fandoms) done throughout the history of het-reccers. We've got nearly 200 manifestos, ranging from 10 recs each to 30 recs each. So, there are literally hundreds of recs in this list. (Special thanks to irony-rocks for compiling the manifestos from the original challenges!)

If you’re interested in writing your own manifesto, check out the guidelines here.

If you spot any errors or omissions, leave us a comment! (If you're reading this on Tumblr, please note that the original LJ post (linked to at the bottom of this post) will be updated periodically, but this post will not.)

YOU GUYS ROCK!

Why This Must Be Read: Sorry, were these scenes not part of the movie? Is everything within them perfectly sweet and in-character? Do you want to just hug everyone involved? Can you imagine little blonde children and an herb garden, too? The answer is yes.

Why This Must Be Read: This author does the loveliest things with prose, and this fic is no exception. Told from Emmett's perspective, it follows the pair throughout Elle's time at Harvard, and it's just...lovely. Both characters feel like real people, fleshed out from their movie (or stage musical, if you prefer) selves, and the whole thing really comes to life in the details. Read, enjoy, and tell the author how much you loved it.

Why This Must Be Read: The movie was pretty fluffy in the way that the best romcoms are, but this fic brings a little bit of reality into the picture—nothing too dire, of course, but it's nice to see the two characters struggling with being real people, in a real relationship, like this. (Also, I'm apparnently a sucker for fics set in the Boston area.)

Why This Must Be Read: The "Before" trilogy is chockablock full of what-ifs, but this fic explores the "probably but we'll never know" moments in the years between Vienna and Paris. There's something beautiful and compelling in the missed connections here—even or especially knowing what will come—and if you love these movies, you will love this story.

Rating/Warning(s): G
Word Count/WIP?: ~1500, complete

Why This Must Be Read: The X-Files fandom was a goldmine for sharing-a-bed fics - the number of almost sold out hotels that Scully and Mulder end up at in fanfic is kind of astonishing, really. I love this particular story for being such a smart, subtle subversion of the trope (the summary for this story is A Mulder and Scully in bed story which does not end in sex or professions of undying love, which tells you all you need to know right there), while also playing it delightfully straight. A short, wonderful little gem of a story.
