By Monday, July 7, Will Smith will be the undisputed No. 1 movie star in the world. My sources tell me that tracking for Hancock (Sony) is in the stratosphere, and its five-day gross will be, conservatively, in the $140M-$150M range, with a bigger number highly possible. That would give the former Fresh Prince his eighth consecutive $100M+ grossing movie, topping the all-time best streaks of two fellow screen legends.

Although I do not know anyone who has seen the movie at this point, the concept, in my estimation, is perfectly tuned to our current culture. Hancock is the superhero who needs rehab, a down-on-his-luck loser with super powers. Jason Bateman plays the publicist working to rehabilitate his image. This new Will Smith role is, essentially, a superhero for the TMZ/Perez Hilton generation.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic follows the NCIS episode 'Gone', and the idea behind it is that Miranda Pennebaker really is River Song (and really, who doesn't think that she's one and the same?). This is a beautiful ficlet about River and who she is when the Doctor isn't with her, and who Miranda really is when Gibbs isn't watching. This is sadly the only crossover with Miranda being River and there should be more!

Why This Must Be Read: Insta-rec. A fic that captures the tug and pull of Selina and Bruce in the Nolanverse that very much echoes their comic book relationship. A few months back, I remember making a comment about how Maroon 5's "One More Night" song perfectly encapsulates a lot of their comic book relationships, so imagine my surprise when I was directed towards this fic, which is based on that premise. And it's written marvelously. The give and take, the pain and destructive nature of their relationship, and yet the underlining theme of love and lust that just keeps bringing them back to each other. Love it.

Why This Must Be Read: I sometimes think it feels forced to combine two canons on the basis of a shared concept like this, but the idea is explored so well here: As children keep disappearing in a small town where Ben and Bev are starting to settle down, certain memories start scratching only vaguely at the surface. The story definitely isn't 100% pairing-focused, but with so little fic out there about these two I adored getting a story that tackled that ambiguity of their very open-ended departure from Derry and how that relationship could resume when they've presumably forgotten so much about each other. The glimpses of them building a life together are perfect and sweet, but the shadow of the past adds just a touch of bitter.

Why This Must Be Read: From my AO3 bookmark: Really, really wonderful 'drop Starbuck into Trek (2009) universe' crossover. It takes the heavily damaged Kara Thrace from Maelstrom and instead of a crazy two-way trip to Earth and back, she gets a one-way trip to Federation space, and it's so very believable that this is a way she might never have returned to Galactica.

The Federation crew takes Kara at face value - no unstated expectations piled on her, just the offer of camaraderie.

She has a comfortable friends-who-used-to-be-frakbuddies thing with Kirk, and a very slow-building patient-to-something-to-friends-to-lovers thing with McCoy. She gets a female friend in Gaila, whose effervescence is too much for even Starbuck to withstand.

Her ever-present underlying grief gives the whole thing just the right touch of angsty reality.

It's very much a Trek-universe story, and no one else from BSG is mentioned by name, but the hints are there in her moments of introspection and rare candid conversations with people who become friends.

If you're a Trek fan or a Kara Thrace fan, I highly recommend reading this one. I just wish the author had written more, because this is a universe I would love to visit again. There is a fun very short cracky follow-up fic, but nothing substantial.

Why This Must Be Read: I've never watched any of the Stargate series, and in fact would not have known who John Sheppard is had the story not been tagged as a crossover. So if you're coming to this just as an Avengers fan, never fear! "A Widow's Tale" is a series (which can really be taken as one long story) that assumes movieverse!Natasha was, like her comicsverse self, modified and conditioned in certain physical ways by the Red Room. The series is a fascinating balance between history and present, and between chosen and actually-genetically-related families. Above all, it's a fascinating look at the woman behind the Black Widow, and the things and people she carries with her.

Why This Must Be Read: John Connor has a fair amount in common with Buffy Summers when you think about it--an unasked-for destiny, a responsibility to save the world, a mentor who blurs the role between parent and everything else, and a tendency to fall for the 'enemy.' In this fic, we get a glance into what Buffy's life might be like, if she'd survived Judgement Day and fell in with the Reese brothers and Connor's inner circle. It's het but not particularly shippy--this pair is kindred spirits more than lovers, and the focus here is more on the good fight and the toll it takes on people who have been fighting for too long and still have miles to go.
